Ten years ago.............

But mostly, I hate the way I don't hate you

not even close…

not even a little bit…

not even at all.

I was so engrossed with the book that I forgot kung anong oras na. Malapit ko namang matapos ang libro. Nando’n na ‘ko sa part na kung saan ang bidang babae ay nagbasa ng poem in front of the class.

Pathetic. I would never do such thing like that, I said under my breath. I would rather keep my feelings to myself than say it in front of the world. They don’t care, anyway.

As I was about to close the book, I heard na may nag-uusap sa kabilang aisle. Hindi muna ‘ko umalis sa puwesto ko. I grabbed another book and pretend to read. Actually, I’m just eavesdropping. I buried my face in the book that I was reading  and the hardbound books from the shelves were enough to conceal me from them.

Why did he still ask her sa prom?” patuloy niyang sabi.

We can’t lose our friendship sa isang babae lang.”

I heard another voice again. Parang tatlo silang nag-uusap. Obviously, tatlo lang naman ang narinig ko. I could not make a conclusion na apat silang lahat becuse evidently ‘yon lang ang narinig ko. Malay mo, baka may isa pa silang kasama. An entity from the unknown world. What am I even thinking?

I could hear anger in the guy’s voice. Siya ‘yong inagawan ng ka-date.

“Just let it pass, dude. Pabayaan mo na si Matthew.”

I tried not to laugh too loudly. Baka marinig pa nila ‘ko.. Hahaha.. Oh my... Kapangalan pa ni Kuya Matty, the guy that they are talking about.

“Bro, Daniella already said yes. Hindi mo na mababawi ‘yon. Ask another girl. Everyone’s dying to be with you sa prom,” he advised.

“Yeah, as if that would be too easy,” heartbroken guy said.

                “Just forgive Matty, dude.”

                Matty...

                Matty..

Then, a thought clicked into my head. Sure, kuya’s not a very good brother but he’s my family. It should be blood first. Parati man kaming nag-aaway ni kuya, but I can’t let those dimwits talk behind my bro. Isusumbong ko talaga sila.

I heard a clap coming from the group. Heartbroken guy laughed devilishly. I know, the laugh may not sound like devilish to other people, but to me he sounds like that two-horned angel.

“Man, hear this. I have an idea.”

Finally, I recognized the voice. Alam ko talaga among the four of them, siya ‘yong may sungay.

Count your days, Quen. Malalaman ‘to ni Kuya Matty.
