Prologue

New games always sparked interest in people, especially games with concepts only explained vaguely and on expensive and immersive systems. So when a new company, ImmerseTech came out with "Game Pods", people of all ages were interested in what exactly they were. Cylindrical pods made to accommodate people of all shapes and sizes that brought you into a game and let you interact using your mind. It was technology that was commonly found in sci-fi movies and cartoons where players would get trapped and have to fight out. Because of that, lots of people wouldn't purchase them, despite the surprisingly low cost. Paranoia told them they would end up like characters in these situations.

Yet, after a year or so, almost every household had one, most with more. The games were fun and exercised your mind while also allowing you to play in a world where you didn't have to worry about long-term consequences of your actions. Then, years after ImmerseTech had seemingly stopped producing games, they came out with a new one, Level Hopper. It was incredibly inexpensive and everyone was surprised by the new release. There were millions of sales in an extremely short period of time and it seemed like everyone was playing.

However, one-day things went wrong. Usually, in any games in which you can die, such as Level Hopper you would receive an option to exit out or restart, but when people were dying, they were just sent back to the beginning. No exit option. People were freaking out, searching for any way to eject them from the game before all current players were killed at random and then they appeared together in many different groups at the first level. In a single player game.

"A well planned ruse can trick the smartest of people. And this one has. At the beginning most of you were concerned about being trapped here like in your television shows, movies and cartoons, and now you have been. Just as this game normally has a time limit, this version does to, but the time is slower just in case some of you are new. Each level has a limit of 36 hours – a day and a half.

"As you should know by now, the first level starts with snow which slowly piles up behind you before you can escape to the next level. Team up or play alone, I don't care, but if you die now, you die in real life. Test it if you must but don't blame me when you never wake up in your pod. Finish the game and you'll be allowed out, but only those who can finish will escape.

"Good luck and have fun, Level Hoppers." A voice that everyone recognized as the founder of ImmerseTech boomed, as everyone bounced from foot to foot, paced nervously or started breaking down in tears or anger. Some people looked to each other, talking and quickly forming small teams. Others hurried to gather materials and make it to the next levels. Others still, didn't make any moves to do anything and the final people thought that it was another ruse, running into enemies without a second thought and immediately getting them killed.

The dead bodies lingered, blood splattered around them. They were there for a minute before fading and leaving any equipment they had on the already on the floor for others to loot. And so, the game began.
