"So," you began, gently leaning your head against Himiko's shoulder as you both peered into the night sky. For the past ten minutes, you both had been sitting quite far from the base of Suzuki and his lackies, and during that short, yet eternal-feeling duration, you had grown to wonder what Toga had meant by her previous words. "What are we waiting for, exactly?"
Himiko giggled and pressed a small kiss to your forehead. "Don't worry about it!"
A small grin showed on your lips as you made eye-contact with the blonde you had fallen in love with. "Oh, really?" you inquired. "Because last time you said that, it just so happened that you and Dabi ate all the banana bread I baked one time."
"What?" she scoffed. "Me? No, never!"
You laughed and briskly pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Well, whatever it is, I'm surprised they let us go that easily. You guys had to kidnap me to join, and they just let us go," you reminisced. "Maybe I should go join them instead."
She gave you a wide smile, but it didn't meet those golden eyes you admired.
"Can I tell you something?" she questioned. Her tone was laced with sorrow and regret, and her eyes glimmered with anguish and fear. "It's... related to your parents."
You nodded and watched her sigh and fumble with her hands. It was out of character for such a cheery and bubbly girl like herself, but if she needed to get it off her chest, then you would allow her to do so.
"You remind me a lot of this one girl I knew," she began, looking into your eyes and a small smile lining her lips. "She was feared as a villain by her schoolmates, as her quirk was so easy for her to pin others down. She had the power to do anything within those moments when the others were paralyzed, and thus, was shunned for her quirk."
You nodded.
"She had a tragic home life. Her parents were too busy with their lives as pro-heroes, and when they were home, they would rely on the girl's grandmother for everything a parent should have done." Your eyes widened as you looked at Himiko, watching as she internally battled about what details she would provide. "Her grandmother was a kind woman. She accepted her granddaughter's flaws and made a home for her."
Himiko grasped your hand. "One day, while she—the girl—was playing at the park, a robbery had taken place across the street in a small store. She watched in horror as the police fired their guns at the villains, who had already made their escape and were heading across the rooftops."
You understood what she was trying to say, and thus, you leaned against her and gently caressed her hand with your thumb, gently encouraging her to continue.
"Eventually, she saw her parents rush onto the scene and chase after the robbers, shouting commands at one-another. The girl, worried for her parents, chased after them, paralyzing every one who attempted to get her to safety. And soon, she found the scene of her bloodied, deceased parents in an alleyway. With blades pierced all along their bodies, and their blood dripping down the walls, the young girl, barely five or six years old, crumbled and sobbed."
You bit your lip as you continued to listen to the tale of your parents' murders, gently sighing and holding a blank expression on your face. Your face expressed how you felt—blank. The immunity of the situation had been keeping you from remembering their mangled bodies, or the stare of their murderer.
"Before she could continue to scream and cry, another young girl approached," Himiko continued. "She was a blond with golden eyes, and fangs lined her smile as she watched the young girl cry, but it faded as she observed the scene. She had been watching the entire thing, and thus witnessed the murders of two pro-heroes, and said nothing as her smile faded and she sat beside the sobbing girl."
You bit your tongue and held back the tears that threatened to fall, clenching Himiko's hand tighter and tighter as you imagined the gaze of the murderer.
"After about an hour," she sighed. "The bodies of her parents had been found and dragged away, and it was soon revealed that their murderer was a pro-hero, who had killed them over a minor disagreement of rankings for that year."
And finally, you broke. Broken sobs escaped your throat as you separated yourself from Himiko, burying your face in your hands and curling up into a ball. You flinched when you felt her arms embrace you, but remained still as Himiko ran her fingers through your hair.
"I'm telling you now because you weren't in the right mind," she said. "I was planning to tell you the night we had that argument, but then all that happened."
"I don't care," you said, standing up on wobbly legs and wiping the last of your tears. "The past is the past, and as long as I have you, I don't care about anything else. It wasn't like my parents treated me the best, anyway." You laughed and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "I think I only cried because of the fear I felt in that moment."
An eccentric grin made its way onto her face, and within seconds of you both sharing the memories, the warehouse the opposing group called home went up in an array of orange and red flames, which was followed by an explosion.
"Well," you chuckled, smiling at the sea of flames that engulfed the building. "That was one hell of a surprise."
Himiko laughed and pressed her lips to your own, to which you kissed back and wrapped your arms around her waist. When you both pulled away, you both smiled at each other and connected your foreheads, letting your affectionate gazes towards each other do all the talking.
"Are you two lovebirds going to come or not?!"
You both smiled at the familiar voice, and your heads turned to see Dabi and Shiggy. Dabi held a bored expression, while Shiggy was pretending to gag.
"Ew, romance," Mr. In Need of Moisturizer chimed, gesturing for the three of you to follow him as he walked away.
Dabi shoved his hands in his pockets, a small but genuine smile tracing his very chapped lips. "That's pretty gay," he joked.
"Oh, shut it!"
The three of you laughed and followed the blue-haired man-child, where Twice and Kurogiri waited alongside Shiggy.
"There's the two lovebirds!" Twice chimed in his cheery tone, jumping towards you and Toga and wrapping you both in a death-hug. "If you guys died, I would've killed you!"
Dabi stepped forward and rested a hand on Himiko's shoulder. "Oh, c'mon, let's play nice," he said, shooting you a quick smile before glancing at the blonde in front of him. "After all, we can't let our favorite psycho end up dead."
Kurogiri said nothing as he stepped forward, placing a water bottle in you and Toga's hands. "Are you both alright? No injuries?"
You and Himiko glanced at each other and smiled. "Nope, but thanks, Walking Smoke Cloud."
"Why you little-!"
"Get in the car before I make sure your heads will be the wheels!" Shiggy threatened, and you and the rest of the league did just that. And before you knew it, Dabi was listening to music and scrolling through his phone, while Twice and Toga were scrolling through TikTok together and planning their next ultimate dance. You rested your head on Himiko's shoulder, closing your eyes and allowing a small smile line your lips when you felt her head resting on yours.
While everything would continue to be chaotic, you knew that as long as you were beside Himiko, everything would work out.
And who knows? Maybe you both could build a future together one day—regardless of where it brought you.
