~ Katiana's POV ~

We enter the Institute and Jace runes himself then takes Simon's hand to make him able to see the Institute as we do.

"Where are we? What the hell? Clary is there a war going on that I don't know about?" Simon asks.

"There is now," answers Jace.

"And our mom is probably at the center of it," I say and catch up to Jace, Simon and Clary behind us. Seeing all the technologie, Simon speaks up.

"Yeah. What is the place? There's a lot of gear here. What'd they do, rob a tech shop? So, this cold blooded killer's gonna help us?"

"He's not a killer. He's protecting us," Clary and I answer in sync.

"Specially you, it's sort of our thing," adds Jace.

"Your thing? You guys have a thing?" Simon asks, obviously talking about Clary and Jace, jealousy dripping from his voice.

"He means a Shadowhunter thing. That's what they do. Protect humans against demons," I shrug.

"Demons. Right. That makes perfect sense. Because there are demons running all around New York," Simon says, disbelieving.

"That is the first correct thing you've said all day," confirms Jace.

"Won't they find us?" asks Clary, worried. Once Jace rassured her that their wards and the NYPD would take care of it, Alec arrives asking why there is a mundane in the Institute.

"A Circle member followed him to get to the girls," answers Jace.

"Circle rune, just like the guys who took my mother," adds Clary.

"What exactly is a Circle member and why are they trying to kill us," asks Simon. Good question mate.

"All we know is that the Circle led a revolt. A lot of shadowhunters got killed, including my father," says Jace.

"And since the revolt, we've been forbidden to even hear about the Circle," finishes Alec.

"But how is that even possible? It's your history," says Clary.

"Well we didn't even know we were shadowhunters so," I trail off.

"You're right," agrees Clary. Shocker. "And now the only person who knows the truth is gone, so I don't care about your rules or what's forbidden. There's gotta be someone who can tell us why they've taken my mother." Just as I was about to scold Clary for being so impolite and inconsiderate, Jace speaks up.

"There is. Follow me," Before we can go far, Jace turns around and stops Simon from following us.

"Hey, we're a package deal," protests Clary.

"There are runes all over the floor that would kill your mundie boyfriend," deadpans Jace.

"He's not-" "I'm not-" they both start. "We're, uh, just friends" "Best friends." Ouch, you just got best friend zoned Simon.

"Yeah. And I'm tough. I can handle runes. So uh, bring on the runes. What exactly are runes?" asks Simon, making me scoff.

"They give shadowhunters our demon fighting powers," answers Isabelle, walking towards us. She passes her stele on the rune on her forearm.

"So hot," says Simon, apparently in complete awe. I don't blame him, of course, but he could hide it better. "The rune," he 'clarifies' after Jace clears his throat.

"Don't worry Clary. I'll watch over the best friend. In fact, I was about to make breakfast," rassures Isabelle.

"On second tought, the runes might be less lethal," jokes Jace.
