Chapter 7

~Clary's POV~

Jace is holding the necklace mom gave me after I told him about yesterday night.

"And he spoke to you?" he questions. I nod.

"He said my name. He said, "Your mother for the cup,""

"Who said that?" Alec speaks up from the doorway. We turn to him and speak in sync.

"Valentine."

"He's with my mother," I add.

"And he can speak to you throught that necklace? Here in the Institute?" He questions.

"It's like when I saw Dot," I confirm.

"It's a portal shard," Jace informs before looking back up to me. "That's why your mother wanted you to have it."

"All I know is what I saw. My mother is alive. Unconscious but alive."

"Where are they?" Alec asks me.

"I don't know."

"But you said you saw them. Where they any identifying characteristiques? Equipment, weapons, photographs?"

"I don't remember. It was awful." I shudder thinking back to seeing Valentine.

"Alec, lighten up," Jace says.

"I'm trying to get something we can use out of this," he says before turning back to me. "Clary what exactly did you see?"

"Valentine has my mother!" I exclaim. "That's what I saw."

"Emotions are nothing but a distraction. You're ruled by them. We're taugh to control them."

"And how does that work out for ya?" I refer back to yesterday, angry that he's basically the reason I lost my memories forever.

"It is my job to protect the Institute. If Valentine can see in, that's a door I have to shut. Now... Let me have a look at that thing," he says, gesturing to the necklace. Jace gives it to him. "Now it's in proper hands," Alec says, walking out.

"Hey! Alec where are you going?" I call out to him, Jace and I following him out.

"To put it somewhere safe. Where no one could be tempted to use it."

"We should use it. Alec, we should use it to get Valentine," Jace tells him.

"If I were Valentine, I would make sure you think you have a chance of rescuing Jocelyne. And then I'd lure Clary to me and leverage her life for the cup," Alec explains. He activates a rune on the floor and an hiding spots comes out.

"I like Jace's idea. We saved Simon from the vampire with this method," I protest.

"Yeah, vampires. Bored, decadent, self-involved vampires." He puts the necklace in the hiding place and closes it. "Valentine is a real threat. He can't be handled by four shadowhunters."

"Five, don't forget Kate," Jace says and Alec looks him.

"I wasn't."

"Hey!" I protest. "We're full shadowhunters."

"Whatever, just leave it there." He tells us and walks out.

I storm off to Kate's room to inform her of what happened and to rant. I arrive at her door and start knocking hard. She opens the door, a frown on her face and rubbing her eyes.
