"So yeah, he has been spreading rumors about me. I didn't even notice the way people were acting around me though." I tell Grace, Destiny and Ashley.
"Vengeance time?" Destiny asks with a devious smile.
"You know me so well." I answer.
Jane has not only been saying that I am a player and I "cheated" on him, but also that I use everyone who gets close to me. First, I did not cheat on him; James had kissed me when we were still broken up and hated each other. Second, I'm not a player, he is the one bouncing from girl to girl just to make me notice him. Third, I love all of my friends, I certainly do not use them.
"Well we can come up with a plan after cheer practice." Grace says. "We are going to be late if we don't hurry."
She is right. We spent so much time at our lockers that we only had 5 minutes to get to the gym which is at the other side of school. Ridgeway Brown is a big school, so big that if you ran around the whole thing it would be running half of a mile. I do this a lot, which is probably why I am so good at track.
"How much time do we have left?" Ashley asks.
"Two minutes." Before I finish saying the sentence, I sprint off.
I'm the first one to arrive at the gym out of Grace, Ashley, and Destiny. Although Destiny is close behind. I let out a sigh of relief as I realize the girls are still changing. I'm already changed so I have about 30 seconds to rest.
"Gosh! Y'all run to fast!" Grace yells once she arrives.
I laugh then grab my bull horn.
"You guys have 10 seconds before we start!" I yell to everybody who is still in the locker room.
Everyone comes running out the locker room right when our coach walks in.
"Great, y'all are ready. Sit girls." The squad sits while I stand next to coach.
"Now it is a new year, which means there will be new stunts, dances, cheers, and tumbling skills. I expect some of you to get this faster than others." She pauses and looks at Anna, Persy, Ashley, Grace, and I. "There are also some news kids this year."
I surf the crowd as I spot Randi and Corrin with a few other faces I don't recognize.
"So of course we have our tryouts for the new year! Which means a chance to win spot as captain." Coach turns to me. "Now this is Diamond. Diamond will be y'all's best cheer buddy. She was captain for 3 years in a row. She was also the first Freshman to become captain. I wish y'all luck competing against her for the crown of captain."
By the way she smirks and hides a smug smile, I can tell she already knows that I'm going to be captain again and break the school record.
"My, oh, my. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Coach Christina. I have of course been this school's sports coach for as long as I can remember. Over the years students call me nicknames. You can call me Coach C, Coach Chris, maybe even Coach Tina." She claps her hands. "Alright, let's get started. We will go in alphabetical order."
Coach turns on her heel and walk to her desk at the back of the gym. Since my last name starts with an S, I probably won't be going for a while. I join the rest of the squad at the back of the room. Coach calls the first name.
"Corrin Cartwright."
I peer over to Corrin who stands up and holds her head high. Her routine is more of tumbling than dances. Which is what I expected since she is used to gymnastics. The routine must have been about 4 minutes.
