Chapter 28

Sometime during our little episode Dr. Walker had excused himself and slipped out, saying something about the fact that David would be okay for another few hours.

Another few hours.

As everyone milled around chatting, laughing, and reliving memories, I was in the present. Logan had refused to leave my side. He knew there was something I wasn't telling him. So, I was sitting on the floor with my back to Logan's chest as I stared at David.

His eyes had regained some of their liveliness, but I could tell that the majority of his renewed energy was faked. He was putting on a show for us and I was the only one who wasn't buying it. The tiredness he was trying to hide was plain as day to me. The way he took a few extra moments to reply to someone, or how his voice would fade in and out as he spoke. I knew him better than he thought.

I was slowly beginning to accept the fact that David wasn't going to be around forever, or he may not even be there the next day. But for that moment in time I refused to believe it. As long as I could fool myself into thinking he was okay, I would be alright.

For a while.

Logan nuzzled my neck, bringing me out of my thoughts. "I hate seeing you like this," he murmured, placing a feather-light kiss at the hollow beneath my ear.

"I know, I'm sorry." A feeling I wasn't accustomed to blossomed in my stomach as I squirmed in his grasp.

"There's no need to apologize, ma vie."

Sighing, I didn't bother answering him. Instead I curled in on myself and formed my body into a tight ball. Logan pulled me into his lap, nestling my head into the crook of his neck. "Logan?" I whispered as he began to stroke my hair.

"Yes?"

"Never mind."

"Tell me, Torian," he said. The order was soft, and it was made even gentler as he tilted my head up so he could meet my eyes.

"I . . ." I trailed off, not knowing where to begin. "I guess I just wanted to thank you again. Without you . . . Losing Dave . . . I don't think . . ." My voice caught in my throat and I swallowed around the clog in my throat. When I opened my mouth to continue speaking, nothing came out. As I tried again, Logan covered my lips with his, efficiently silencing whatever I had been about to say. I made a frustrated sound in the back of my throat to which Logan just smiled at. He cupped the back of my neck with his hand. Too soon, he pulled away from me.

"Don't worry about it. I like being your knight in shining armor," he said, a grin twitching at the corners of his mouth. A giggle bubbled out of my mouth, but the sound seemed foreign to me. It carried to David and he twisted around to face me.

"Cheer up!" he called.

"I'll try," I said with an unconvincing smile. He motioned me over to him and I hauled myself to my feet. Logan began to stand as well, but I waved him back down. He quirked an eyebrow at me, but sank back to the floor all the same. When I reached David's bedside, I just stood there for a moment.

"Sit with me!" he ordered, jerking me down so that I was perched next to his hip.

"You're supposed to be resting," I reminded him, smacking his chest. "Not yanking people around."

"Shut up," he told me, ruffling my hair,

"Have some respect."

"Yes, Alpha," he replied in a low drawl.
