Sasuke always loved to see her smile.
The feeling in his chest left him feeling ill, and the discomfort was showing clearly on his face. A feeling that crawls up the back of your throat and drops to your stomach; he absolutely despised it.
He stared at his closest friend, more specifically the small smile that rested on her face. He watched as she listened to Naruto ramble, allowing the blonde boy to lean on to her shoulder as he talked.
It was no surprise that Sasuke loved Sakura.
Of course, he wouldn't admit that to anyone. Sasuke was never one to chase a girl, they always came to him. He would not say he was extremely popular, but his family's good genes definitely put in the work for him.
Today, Sasuke and his two childhood friends chose to hang out in his backyard. The cool autumn wind blew by occasionally; a constant reminder that summer had ended and school would begin soon. Sasuke smiled at something Naruto said, constantly drifting back and forth between his thoughts and what was going on around him. The dark-haired boy was perfectly content with the way his life was, especially now as he prepared to enter his third and last year of high school.
He was content with his friends. he was content with his school. he was content with his family. he was content with his plans for after graduation.
And he was content with his unrequited love.
The feeling in his chest grew again, and suddenly Sasuke felt nauseous. As if something was slowly rising from his throat. He quickly excused himself from his friends, running towards his house. Sakura and Naruto stared after him, before looking back at one another with concerned faces. Sasuke quickly ran to the bathroom, closing the door behind him with a slam. He leaned over the toilet, fully expecting to throw up. Instead, his chest heaved as he began coughing wildly. He could barely get a breath in, and whenever he tried, he felt as if something was blocking his air flow. He continued coughing for quite some time, keeping his eyes closed and leaning against the wall as he focused on controlling his breathing.
When Sasuke opened his eyes, he did not expect to see a mess of bloody flower petals scattered around him.
He stared, wide eyed, at the scene before him. He was confused, wondering where exactly the petals had even come from. He looked at himself in the mirror, noticing the small amount of blood that stained his lips as well as a few petals clinging to his shirt. The boy jumped, being startled by a knock on the door.
"Sasuke?" Sakura's voice drifted towards him, her tone laced with worry. "Are you alright?"
"Oi, we could hear you coughing all the way from the back door!" Naruto chimed in.
Sasuke weighed his options, before choosing to hide the incident from his friends. How could one possibly explain this? It seemed like something straight out of an old folktale.
"I'm fine, thanks..." he mumbled back.
It was silent for a while, before Sakura spoke up again. "Alright... but if you need anything we'll be right here, okay?"
"Okay."
He faintly heard his friends walk away from the door, and only then did he begin cleaning up the petals. Throwing their remains in the toilet, before flushing them away. He washed away the blood from his mouth, before staring at himself in the mirror.
Just what exactly had happened to him just now?
