By the second and third year of Konoha Academy everyone in the village knew two things about Kaito Senju and Karasu Uchiha; they were as thick as thieves, and no one could catch them.
On the surface Kaito and Kara were good students, getting average scores, and going to the right places at the right times. But the reality was more or less the opposite. Kaito and Kara rarely bothered to go to school, but no one could catch them anyways. They placed just the right amount of effort in the right places, and could easily slide through the cracks with only a few lectures here and there.
Any good ninja knew something was afoot when it came to the two troublemakers, but the duo were masterful at distractions, creating chaos with a few simple words, and never allowing the blame to fall on themselves. It was aggravating for all the parties involved and soon enough they were infamous. Their classmates detested Kara and Kaito, who laid blame on innocent souls and cleverly outwitted young ninja. The civilian-born students were the ones to nickname them 'The Wraiths', accusing them of flying on the coattails of higher and notorious clans, freely manipulating those with fewer abilities on their arsenal.
"Why are we doing this again?" Kara looked over at Kaito who was occupied with a large scroll he had stolen from the restricted section of the library. Kaito had told her that overtime security had increased, but nobody really expected a kid to out-think jonin ninja.
"I want to surprise obaa-san with my knowledge of fuinjutsu," Kaito responded, unaffected by her impatience, "Do you know we are both descendants of Mito-sama? She was known as a seal master, and besides out of the two of us you are better in practice."
That was just it, Kaito was the idea guy. While Kaito created and perfected schemes, he fell apart when it came to actually doing them. Kara, however, could get almost anything right the first time. She copied and synchronized with other people to a scary degree. And for Kaito, Kara was his best filter, projecting his creations to the finest degree,
"And did you know that the Senju allied with the Uzumaki to stand against the Uchiha?" Kara countered, "Seals are not something my bloodline ever catered to."
"Oh, please, when did something like that ever matter," Kaito snickered, "Are you going to let something like bloodline stop you?"
If Kara catered to Kaito's talents, Kaito catered to Kara's senses. Kaito freely accused Kara of the fact that she could be arrogant and conceited, creating barriers that just logically didn't make sense.
"Seals are ridiculously hard," Kara admitted, she hated it when Kaito bated her.
"You'll never succeed with that mindset," Kaito lectured, fingering the scroll, only half paying attention to her conversation, "And I promised I'd get a summoning scroll for you on your birthday, didn't I?"
"That's a hoax," Kara snapped, scowling, "Summoning scrolls have to lend themselves to a summoner for it to actually work, and knowing you, you would bring a cat scroll without a doubt!"
"Cats have an affinity for genjutsu, you know," Kaito snickered loudly, amused at Kara's temper.
"I hate cats!" Kara exclaimed, her brow furrowed, "And they hate me. Dogs are the true angels of the world."
"Whatever you say," Kaito responded, still snickering under his breath, and dropping a scroll on Kara's lap. Kara looked down, sighed with resignation, and then opened it up.
"I really don't think this is a good idea," Kara stared warily at the sign in the library reading 'Restricted Area'.
