Know thyself

"Nice to meet you! I'm Ângelo."

"I'm Nilo. How are you?"

It was that guy I saw playing as if he were a soccer professional at the tryouts, a few hours ago.

"Where are you from?"

This is the typical question from Paulistanos. They recognize an outsider at the first word.

"I'm from the countryside. You probably don't know the city. It is very small."

"Soon the ballads will begin."

"I can't wait."

"And where do you live?"

March 2005. My first day at the largest university in the country. Polytechnic School.

Anyway, we started our friendship on the first day. I was embarrassed: me, friend of the most handsome guy in the class, college, university.

What a pressure!

And now, how do I look? What if I become friends with this guy? The girls in the clubs will only date him.

This was my concern all the time. And I didn't even know the guy well.

Angelo was the kind of guy that every guy his age would like to be. His appearance really attracted attention: red hair, blue eyes, slender and intelligent, he would soon become the most popular guy in college. As if that were not enough, his helium gas voice would be successful with the girls.

I thought:

"I'd better stay away from this guy, pretend I don't know him."

This way I could be at ease. I, of all people, short and still with pimples, full of stigmas. Not to mention my hair. Knowing my genetics well, I would lose them all during college.

Life is not easy for those who have never washed even a dish. And in the largest student housing in the country, as well as in the neighborhood share house, I would have to manage to survive.

And getting by on my own would be the minimum required to get a good internship, then a good job and a girlfriend.

We were in the best phase of our lives and God would not allow anything bad to happen.

"Know thyself."
