Hogwarts was rather busy today. A new wave of students flooded the halls, eager to learn all about magic and mysteries. New students meant more nuisances and childish humor that would be wiped away soon enough--Lucius would make sure of it. Lucius had good grades back in the day, got along well with the teachers, he was even a prefect, but he had never imagined to become this semester's new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher. The job wasn't permanent, he had only volunteered as a way to help his son, Draco; to make sure he was staying in line and getting the education he needed. And to get away from his wife, not that she cared enough about him being away for half the year.

Lucius sorted through sheets of paper, quill in hand, scribbling down tomorrow's lesson for the plethora of new students. The thought of teaching imbeciles how to do basic defense magic was insulting to his position, but he reminded himself often that this was for his son. He truly lacked involvement in his life up until recently.

The large wooden door swung open, a boy draped in Slytherin robes came striding into the office with a smug grin. "Father, it's almost time for the sorting ceremony." Draco stopped a few feet away from the wooden desk, peering down at the papers in hopes to get a sneak peak of what his father was planning. Lucius gathered the papers and sorted them into a large binder. "There are quite a lot of..muggles this year. I can smell their stench from the castle grounds." His mouth twisted into a grimace. "Are you coming to the ceremony, father?"

Lucius nodded, glancing up at his son, "I'll be there in a moment, Draco. Go ahead without me." Draco seemed a bit disappointed, but the boy quickly masked his emotions and nodded. It felt good to have his father around, to prance around the castle grounds and see fear in his classmates eyes, knowing if they said one thing wrong they would face the wrath of both Malfoys. Stupid Potter would finally face threats that carried weight rather than ones with no consequences.

With nothing else to say, Draco turned and left the classroom, disappointed that his father hadn't come with him.

Lucius gathered the remaining papers and stuffed them into the drawers, setting his quill and ink aside before pushing himself from the desk while clutching his cane. He wore a black overcoat and a buttoned up black shirt underneath, his pants hidden underneath the cloak. His silky white hair tied back with a black ribbon, his hands sheathed with leather gloves. Though he hardly cared what the students thought, he would never appear as anything less than intimidating.

Lucius made his way to the twisting hallways and down the shifting stairs, the people in the paintings growing quiet within his presence. His jaw locked as he passed them, mumbles and whispers echoed off the walls as he reached ground level, the chatting continued once he was out of the room.

He entered the secret hallway that would lead him to the top of the stairs without being spotted. He wanted a look at the kids he was stuck with all year. The hallways smelled of the feast to come after everyone was sorted, and Lucius was famished. With all the planning and paperwork, he had forgotten to eat.

The hallways were dimly lit with candles, the occasional ghost passing through the walls. Lucius made his way through the secret passage until he was looming over all the students from the second floor, a few other teachers watching the children. His eyes scanned the clutter of people, searching for his son and the muggles that his son mentioned.

He found his son standing with a small group of people--a couple of the no-good Weasley boys, Harry, and the Granger girl he's heard so much about. All bad. Lucius could tell his son was insulting Harry from the looks on their faces, a few of the Slytherin boys stood behind Draco, laughing. Lucius hoped there were more Slytherins than there were Gryffindors this year; dealing with Draco's little friend group was proving to already be unpleasant.
