Chapter 5

"Mr Peterson I really think you should consider what I'm saying, like I wasn't expecting this and I really don't think I'm up to the task"

"There was a reason you were selected in the debate group, and I dont think you should be asking to forfeit or move to another group"

Here I am having a conversation with the teacher who was in charge of appointing the students in their competitive groups against the other school.

But believe me when I say this conversation is no where in  my favour because the guy isn't gonna budge.

"But sir, isn't it more appropriate for the students to choose what they want to compete on?". I said.

"I am aware of that, and that is what we did the last time and clearly other times in the past, but this this time the school board decided to take this move to see how ready you can be even when the task is impromptu, because when you get older and get a job, you can be given assignments even when you dont expect it, so see this as a training we are imposing to prepare you for the future, so try your best and co-operate with us and show us that you are equal to the task whatsoever"

I've been defeated, there is no further argument from me, especially since he has given me this touchy speech.

"Ok Mr Peterson I'll try my best, and come up with an outstanding presentation"

I said and walked to the door to exit his office.

"Ivan"

I turned at the mention of my name.

"Dont just do this for the school, do it for yourself too, you'll be fine"

With that I nodded and exited his office.

"So?"

I heard a voice which sounded like that of Bridget's behind me.

"How long have you been here?". I said.

She shrugged.

"Not long". She said.

"Well he made me believe that it was best to add me to a debate competition which really gives me the 'goose' at just hearing it. Debate".

I said the last part like it was some bitter lemon in my mouth.

"Well all things happen for a reason, whether good or bad, it's a way of preparation for something bigger". She said cheerfully.

Hold on cheerfully. Did jerk Ricky apologise?

"What's up you look happy? What did Ricky finally come off his ego and apologise?". I asked.

"What? No, it's just...."

"You can tell me anything you know?"

"My long time crush asked me out". She said, blushing soo badly I think I should take her to the school Nurse.

I blinked...like several times.

"Ok look as a friend all I want to do is save you from the trap most girls fall into, in high school,  most especially senior years". I said.

She put on a confused look, and wore a frown afterwards.

"And that is?". She asked.

"It goes like this the cute vulnerable girl falls for some guy who has a popular rank in school, who's always hot and body built and most of all, the cliche of all, wait for it...."

"Um...drum rolls please". I gestured to her.

She tapped her two palms on the wall nearby.

"....the bad boy....dun dun dunnn"

I said closing my eyes only to open it to a really disappointed look on her face.

"Really Ivan you read books even more than girls do". She said.

"Really". I said.

She laughed.

"Look what I'm getting into isnt some sort of 'teen girl falls for the bad boy' novels. It's a real thing and Nicholas isn't a bad boy, he's not soo nerdy or soo dumb either,  he's a young adult who is struggling in life in high school, to be a better person later on".

"Ok let's get real now, look you're my best friend and the last thing I want is to come fighting with some guy who messed up with your emotions"

"I know I'm telling you, I've been crushing on him ever since, and also studying his behaviours, in case a miracle happens, and viola here's a miracle right now, I get you're trying to protect my heart and all, which I really appreciate but I'm as careful as i can be". She said.

"Ok if you say so, I wont stop you from experiencing that adventure,  but at the same time won't want you to be broken, so if you feel you have it under control go ahead, but whenever things get dicey you know who to summon". I said.

"Of course I do, thanks Ivan you're the best". She said and with that we hugged.

"Doesnt friendship just mean a lot to people?".

We broke of the hug to see who just made the comment. Ricky.

"Hey Ricky, I hope you do know what to do now". I said sternly.

"Oh of course, dear Bridget please do the honour of accepting an apology from your belo...."

"I forgive you". She said. And boy am I shocked.

Even Ricky blinked several times before saying.

"Yeah I didn't get you, you what?". He said.

"I FORGIVE YOU".  She said again.

"Hmmm surprised but also sceptical, why this change of heart to forgive at a go? Is there some catch here? Ivan are you planning something with her, because I know you should be the mastermind of the plan and you...."

"Oh just shut up already, I forgive you, no catch, I'm just in a very good mood and state of mind, that's all". Bridge said.

"Oh really, ok then whew, well now my composed apology pattern has gone to waste and a complete waste of my time". Ricky said.

"Hold on you composed an apology?". I said. He looked at me weirdly.

"Yes Ian I did, it's not everyday people like me get to display such cheesy niceness". He said.

"Ok that  is it's not close to niceness, as a matter of fact it means simple respect". I argued.

"Whatever you say weirdo, so what's making you soo happy today Bridge?". He asked, then as if on time, the bell rung and we dismissed for our classes.

"In time you'll know" Bridget shouted.

In a flash, the day of the competition arrived and I was getting nervous as I went through over and over with my debate.
I was approaching my tent when a girl rushed towards me, smiling if I may add.

"Are you the debate speaker for that school?". Sha asked pointing at the tent where my school mates where.

"Yes I am"

"Ok them I'm your opponent, this way please". She said.

"What's your name?". I asked the stranger. To which she smiled, bashful.

"Its Priscilla"
