The school day had ended. Yeonjun and I walked towards my house. It was finally time to talk about us with my mother. I was very nervous and felt insecure. I sighed and tried to think positively. But it didn't work. I became restless and didn't know if I wanted to discuss it. Yeonjun put his arm on my shoulders. "I can see that you are very tense."He said and looked at me. I smiled. "Maybe a little too much." Yeonjun stopped and grabbed my hand. He looked around for a second to make sure no one heard or saw us. He sighed and looked back in my direction. "I have a question Soobin." I looked at him and nodded. "What's the worst that could happen if we discuss it with your mother?" He asked me.
I looked at him in surprise. I thought about it but couldn't really think of anything that could happen. I knew she would accept me because she is my mother and is always there for me when I need her. I might be afraid of her reaction. But I already saw her reaction a little bit when she saw us in my room. She looked angry and disappointed, but I can understand that. I guess I'm scared about how she's going to handle it. How she's going to see and treat me after today. I can't really know how she's going to react. It's easy for me to think what she's thinking, but it's useless. I can't know what she's thinking, it's impossible. Yeonjun is right. I have to think of what is the worst that can happen. The worst thing that could happen is probably not even going to happen. I'm driving myself crazy with these thoughts. I'd better not worry about it too much and just see how it all turns out. It's easier that way.
I looked at him and smiled. "I don't know," I replied. He looked at me. "Soobin, I understand how exciting it is for you, but you're really going to manage to use the right words and tell her." He took me in his arms. I felt a lot better and hugged him back. To be in his arms felt safe. I didn't feel alone and knew that Yeonjun would always be there for me. I closed my eyes, a smile appeared on my face.
A moment later we let go of each other and both smiled shyly. "So...Are you ready to walk on over to your house and tell her?" I nodded. "Okay, come, let's go then."
When we arrived at my house, I saw my mother already standing outside. She was watching us. I felt stressed. Yeonjun waved and smiled at her. I saw that he was trying to be liked by my mother. She waved back and greeted us. "Hey, guys." She said nice. She looked at me uncomfortably. I could see she was trying her best to be nice. "Hello, ma'am." Yeonjun bowed kindly. She bowed back and gestured that we could go inside.
We walked inside. "Are you thirsty?" She asked Yeonjun, "Uh I would like a glass of water." He said kind. She nodded and walked to the kitchen. I sighed. "Yeonjun, go sit on the couch." He looked at the couch and sat down. Meanwhile, my mother came with the glass of water and set it on the little table in front of the couch. I sat down as well. I hesitated a little but decided to bring it up right away. "Mom, can we talk to you for a minute?" I asked calmly and quietly. She looked at us and nodded. She walked towards the couch and sat down.
"I understand that you want to talk about it right away." I nodded and looked at Yeonjun. He smiled. I sighed. "Do you promise not to go crazy?" She looked at me in surprise. "Well, it depends on what it is. What I saw this morning did give me a scare." She said. I understood what she meant. "Then this is really going to scare you," I said guiltily. She sighed. "Just tell me, I'll decide how intense it is." And looking at both of us. "Okay... Well, Yeonjun and I... We're dating." I said quickly. I expected a heavy sigh but it remained silent. I looked at her and saw that she started laughing. I looked at Yeonjun who didn't understand either.
"Mom, why are you smiling?" She stopped laughing and looked at us smiling. "Do you really think I would mind? In fact, I'm glad you dare to tell me!" She sighed. "I was afraid you wouldn't want to tell me things anymore because we often argue. I wanted to be a better mother to you, only I didn't succeed very well because I'm still angry with your father and sometimes I take it out on you..." She looked at me with a sad expression. I was silent and understood what she meant. My mother is still not over it. I was glad she didn't mind and could accept it. I felt a lot nicer after knowing how things really were with my mother. I knew she wanted to do her best to be a good mother, but because of all her anger, I started to think I was too much for her. Fortunately, I was wrong about that and now know the reason why she acted that way. I stood up and hugged her. "It doesn't matter mom, thank you for accepting me," I said calmly. She put her arms around me.
"Sorry I was stupid to you, I really didn't mean to." I nodded. "It's okay, you can't help it either." We let go of each other. I noticed a tear slide down her cheek. "Mom, don't cry," I said smiling. "Sorry, I just can't help it, I haven't hugged you in such a long time." She laughed. I looked at Yeonjun. He was looking at me proudly. "Well, Yeonjun right?" Asked my mom and now looked at him too. He nodded. "Yes, my name is Yeonjun." He said nice. "I invite you to stay here for dinner." Said she excitedly. He looked at us happily.
"Thank you!" Yeonjun said. My mother smiled at him. "Soobin, can you take a look at what we have to eat?" My mother asked me. I nodded and walked to the kitchen. I saw in the corner of my eye that my mother sat down next to Yeonjun. "Will you promise me that you will take good care of Soobin?" I heard her say to him. He nodded at her. "I promise, I will take good care of him." He said nice. "Hm, thank you, I trust you Yeonjun." And she put her hand on his shoulder.
