Y/n POV
"It would take a lot of energy to build a gate like this, but that's gotta be what happened." Mike is explaining what Mr. Clark told us at 'Will's funeral' to El. "Otherwise, how'd Will get there, right?"
El nods. "Right."
"What we wanna know is, do you know where the gate is?" Lucas asks El.
El shakes her head.
"Then how do you know about the Upside Down?!" Lucas throws his arms in the air in exasperation.
I look away from the trio to find out what happened to Dustin. The kid himself was spinning around in circles in a corner of Mike's basement.
"Dustin, what are you doing?" I ask him, causing Mike and company to turn around and look at the apparently crazed kid. "Dustin? Dustin!" I shout, finally getting his attention.
He looks up at us. "I need to see your compasses."
"What?" Mike scrunches up his nose in confusion.
"Your compasses, all of your compasses, right now!"
Mike, Lucas, and I all run to grab our compasses, and I can sense the confusion rolling off the two boys in waves.
We put all of the compasses on the table in front of us.
Mike is, apparently, unimpressed. "What's exciting about this?"
"Well, they're all facing North, right?" Dustin says.
Lucas feels the same way as Mike. "Yeah, so?"
"Well, that's not true North."
"What do you mean?" Mike questions.
"I mean exactly what I just said, that's not true North." Dustin pauses for a minute and looks at our faces. I'm starting to understand what Dustin means, but not completely.
"Are you all seriously this dense?" Dustin asks.
"No, the sun rises in the East, and sets in the West, right?" I say slowly, pointing in the respective directions. Mike and Lucas turn to me. Dustin looks happy someone is actually getting what he's saying. "So that would mean that that is true North, right?" I point in a direction and look to Dustin for confirmation. He nods happily.
Mike still doesn't get it. "So what you're saying is, the compasses are broken?"
"Do you even understand how a compass works?" Dustin looks at him.
"Do you SEE a battery pack on this?" I wave a compass in Mike's face.
He slaps my hand away. "No."
"No, you don't, because it doesn't need one." Me and Dustin say at the same time. He glances at me.
"The needle is magnetically drawn to Earth's North Pole." Dustin explains.
"So, what's wrong with them?" Lucas asks.
Why are all of my friends so dense? I think to myself.
"That's what I couldn't figure out, but then I remembered, you can change the direction of a compass with a magnet. If there's a presence of a more powerful magnetic field, the needle reflects to that power, and then I remembered what Mr. Clark said, the gate would have so much power-"
Mike finally gets it and cuts Dustin off. "So you're saying if we follow the compasses-"
I cut Mike off this time. "They should lead us to the gate." We all make eye contact with each other.

We are now walking along the railroad tracks, following Dustin who is telling what direction we need to go in with the compass.
