Grinning I’m dancing through the kitchen to the high spirited beat of ‘Wrapped Up’ by Olly Murs while I fetch all the ingredients that I need from the shelves. One after one I put them into a bowl. One with the liquid’s and one with the dry ingredients just as the receipt instructions say.
‘Flour’ is the next point on the list and I spin over to the cupboard where we usually keep things like flour and sugar. Singing along to the song I open the door just to find nothing. I mean not nothing but anything but flour.
After going through the whole kitchen and coming to the realization that we don’t have any flour I sit in front of my two bowls and look at the ingredients that I have already mixed together. I can’t just throw all of that away. So I make the decision to ask a neighbour to borrow me some flour so my cookies or at least most ingredients of them wouldn’t go to waste.
So here I am, standing outside our neighbours’ door and I’m slowly losing my hope that someone will open it. After I ring the doorbell for the third time, it finally swings open. In front of me stands Ashton with his dark blonde hair sticking to his wet forehead and droplets of water sliding down his slim body until they reach the towel, which is firmly wrapped around his waist.
“Hey, can I help you?” He asks in a happy voice like it’s the most normal thing for him to open the door nearly naked. It surely isn’t for me. This whole situation seems more like one of my daydreams than something that’s really happening, like in reality. I can feel my head heating up instantly and my mouths agape for a moment before I can stutter a few words. “I-I-I… Do-o you ha-ave some flou-ur you could lend ?”
He examines me a little confused. “Flour? What are you making?” “Coo-ookies.” I try to hide my red face and big glasses I’m wearing behind my brown hair. He just smirks at me before turning around and gesturing me in. “Wait a minute.”
I feel so embarrassed. I bet he read all my thoughts. The way he smirked he could read me like an open book. Why can’t I be cool for just once?
Ashton is back before I know it and hands me a package of flour with a wink. “But I want some Cookies in return.” They only answer I can master is a simple nod and then I’m fleeing out of the door and back home.
After closing my door it takes me 10 full minutes to realise what had just happened. I talked to Ashton, my freaking handsome neighbour and I made a complete fool out of myself. Good job, Caleigh. I let out a deep sigh. Why do I always have to be so shy and hide behind my big glasses?
Arrgh I’m such a loser. I bet he thinks I’m a freak now. I mean who wouldn’t the way I looked at him and stuttered like I was retarded. Why can’t I be confident and sexy for once? Keep myself cool and not getting all nervous around my crush like all the pretty girls at my school can...
Later that day in the evening I’m sitting on the windowsill in my room reading one of my favourite books “The Fault in our Stars” by John Green. My eyes wander out the window from time to time, landing on the window directly opposite from mine. I wonder if Ashton hides behind these curtains still laughing over the nerdy girl from next door.
“Hey, Caleigh!” I’m startled when I hear a rather unfamiliar voice calling my name. I instantly look through my room, but just like a minute ago there’s nobody in here with me. I wrinkle my forehead in confusion as I shake my head and return my attention back to my book. Thinking I had just imagined the voice until I hear it calling my name again. This time I recognize the voice and panic rises inside of me.
My gaze finally wanders outside my window and there were moments ago you could just see a pair of blue curtains is now a smiling Ashton. “He-ey Ashton.”
Again, just like earlier today I instantly feel my head grow red and the unieasiness grow inside my gut. The nervousness gets the best of me and before I can think of it I turn my face back to the book, letting my hair fall in front of my face.
“I don’t wanna bother you or keep you from reading, but you promised me some reward for the flour.” I hear him say in his high spirited voice as always. When I look back up at him he shoots me a wink and big grin making my retarded state even worse.
“W-wait, I-I-I’m gon-hna get t-them.” I stumble over my words again while I get down from my windowsill nearly throwing my book out the window all the way down into the small stripe of our yard where it meets the Irwins.
I hear Ashtons laugh boom through the air as I flee out of my room to get some cookies I could give him as a thanks. I prepare a plate with the treats as quick as I’m able to do in my disabled condition.
With shaky hands and my heart beating so hard that I fear it’s gonna jump out of my chest anytime now I carry the plate up the stairs. Before I enter my room again I’m taking some deep breaths trying to calm myself so I won’t look like a freak for once.
As soon as I’m in my room I realize how dumb I’ve been again but it’s already too late because Ashton’s eyes are on me and there’s no way I’m gonna draw back now.
When I’m at the window I realize there’s no way round my dumb mistake because the distance between our windows is just too far to hand him the plate over it.
“I-I’m s-sorry, I think t-this w-won’t work..” I stutter again. “I’m j-just g-gonna bring i-it to your door.” I’m already turning around to leave when his call for me stops me.
“You don’t need to go all that way.” He smiles at me cheekily then I already watch as he steps onto his windowsill and then onto the branch of the tree right in front of our windows.
In a few seconds he’s over at my window and smiling like a Cheshire cat. So I go over to him and hand him the treats out of the window where he takes the plate from my hands. His finger grazes mine in the process and I instantly feel my skin prickling at where we touched.
He’s so close to me as he says his thank you and shoots me a last smile before he goes back into his room and just as he steps in the doorbell goes off.
He leaves me there totally stunned with a short bye as he puts the cookies on his desk and leaves for the door.
I can’t believe what had happened today.
This must have been a dream.
