chapter seven - getting to know you

MIXED POV

BOLD - Hooni | NORMAL - You

"hi!"

"are you feeling alright?"

"yeah"

That was only a bit of a lie. He was feeling alright because he was talking to you.

"so... about the project."

"i have an idea on what we could do. wanna hear it?"

"sure"

"so... we each come up with something and write it on our own. then, we exchange our drafts and decide which one is going to be the final one that we edit."

"what format will we write in"

"a letter."

"okay"

"did you have something else in mind?"

"no"

"if you say so..."

You wondered if you were being too chatty. He wondered if he wasn't saying enough. The two of you hoped the other wasn't getting bored.

To be honest, you found that talking to him was nice. You blushed a little, remembering how the two of you had just hugged a few hours before...

If you really did have a crush on someone so shy, you would have to strike up conversations first.

"unrelated, but i'm not looking forward to school..."

"neither am i"

"people will beat me up"

"this time, i won't let them."

"you don't have to"

"i want to."

Hooni felt his throat tighten a bit. There you were again, being kind to him when you shouldn't.

"okay"

"you don't know them, but you could sit with sora, ara and i during our lunch period, if you wanted"

He pondered on that statement. What if the other two girls hated him?

"maybe"

"well... you have plenty of time to think about it."

"yeah" 

Something was telling you that you needed to address the situation that had happened today.

"i'm so sorry about hyun-ki."

"it's okay"

"how long has he been like this towards you?"

"since i was at this school"

"no way."

Your eyebrows furrowed in slight anger. Tomorrow, you planned on cutting off ties with Hyun-ki completely. You'd never talk to him again after that incident with Hooni.

"do you mind telling me about that? only if you're comfortable with it."

"no it's fine"

"he just hurts me like everyone else does"

"i guess it was a way for him to take out any stress. maybe he enjoyed it idk"

This was painful for you to hear.

"when i said i was gonna make sure people don't hurt you anymore, i meant it."

"thank you"

"you're welcome."

Hooni sniffled and wiped his eyes, obviously emotional from your promises to protect him.

For a while, neither of you sent any messages. The silence was awkward, but peaceful at the same time. Hooni set his phone down and hugged his knees, sighing. You laid down on your bed, thinking about how school might go.

Surprisingly, Hooni was the first one to send after around five minutes.

You picked up your phone, and felt your heart clutch as you read the message in front of you.

"will you be my friend"

Hooni's arms were trembling. Despite all of the kindness and generosity you had shown him in just a few days, the nervous feeling in his gut told him that you might say no.

"of course i will! i'd love to be your friend."

Letting out a small squeak of joy, Hooni's eyes brightened and his lips curled into a smile. Not only did you accept his offer, but you even said you would love to. However, like how he usually is, those fluttery moments were immediately followed by dread... Why was he feeling so happy? You were his friend now. He was a terrible friend.

...And if he was a terrible friend, imagine how bad he would be if he was your boyfriend.

After taking a deep breath, he decided that he might as well try his best. This was a once-in-a-lifetime offer to him.

"thank you so much"

"again, you're welcome! ^^"

While Hooni felt great, you were just as content. You were really friends with Hooni now! Thinking about it almost made you giggle. In fact... as you thought about it more... he was already a much better crush then Hyun-ki. Cuter, too.

You felt way too sleepy for your liking, and it was getting rather late, so you decided to send one more message.

"hey, hooni."

"yeah?"

"what's your favorite animal?"

"anything cute"

"same!"
