It started and ended with the ocean.
I remember that day clearly,
You eagerly grabbed my hand and
Pulled me close to you
The tide was low that night
And the moon tried her best
To outdo the sparkle in your eyes
The waves taunted our feet
As we walked on the beach,
And I remember scolding you
For wearing such expensive shoes
"But tonight is a special occasion"
You stated as you gave me a cheeky smile
And as the tide rose higher and higher
So did the warmth that radiated
From my stomach to my chest
That night the ocean teased us
And being the carefree lovers we were,
We gave in and laughed as we
Raced back to the staircase...
The ocean grew silent
Or maybe the space between us was
Just too loud?
You called my name and
Before I knew what your intention was
Your lips were entangled in mine
And from that point on,
The ocean was ours
And ours alone
For it knew our secrets
All of our late night conversations
Our morning faces,
And even the soles
of our feet
All too well.
And even though
The ocean swept away our footprints
I find myself
Walking along the same paths
That we used to walk
When we were together.
And even as time passes
The ocean will always remember
