Chapter 14.
"Aren't you going to tell me how you found him?" I ask Kai for the thousandth time.
"I have my ways." and he replies the same answer for the thousandth time while shrugging and smiling.
We are now heading to the address written on the little sticky note that Kai somehow was able to get through Maggie. I just hope that the man is able to help us with something and that all this effort won't be wasted.
Kai slows down the car and concentrates on numbers outside the the houses "104...106...109...111...113 that's the one!" He points towards a pale brick house as he parks the car by the sidewalk.
We get out the car and walk slowly towards the front door. I give Kai one last glance before he knocks on the door lightly.
A few seconds later a man probably in his 50s opens the door. He is bald and wearing dark framed glasses "How can I help you?" He asks looking between me and Kai.
"Hello, we are looking for Mr. Hardin Smith." Kai replies
"Yes. I'm." The man again looks between me and Kai.
"Oh nice to meet you Mr. Smith. I'm Kai Silvers and this is my friend Iris Val." Kai extends his hand forward and Mr. Smith takes it and shakes it lightly "We came here to ask you about a few things considering your old pet cat." The second Kai says the word cat. Mr. Hardin's expression turns hard and he slams the door shut on our face.
Me and Kai exchange a glance before he knocks on the door again. This time no one opens the door and there is no answer.
I feel my hands becoming wet and sweaty. I knew this was not going to be good, but this seems even worse. Kai knocks again and again but no answer. If Mr Hardin didn't open the door the first time he did we could have mistaken the silence as no one is inside.
"Mr Hardin please this is important!!" Kai yells still knocking the door. "We just want to kno-"
Kai is cut by Mr Hardin yelling from behind the closed door. "I have nothing to do with that cat anymore leave me alone and never come back!"
I grab Kai's arm stopping him from knocking. "Please Mr Hardin." I yell this time "He is in my house. He is hurting us. We don't know what to do. You are the only one who can help us. Please. My friend is already in coma because of him and who knows I might be next." I don't know from where that thought came from but I knew this is true. Ever since I found out Oreo is the one who almost killed Leah I felt he will do the same to me or of my family.
I feel Kai jolt beside me after hearing this. He turns his head looking at me but I never break my gaze from the door. "Iris you will be fine. We will find a way to-" Kai is cut off again when Mr Hardin opens the slowly. His eyes were soft this time and it felt he was studying me.
There is a long pause before Mr Hardin start talking "My daughter died." He whispers. My eyes widen in shock at hearing this I want to say something but he continues "She was killed by that cat she named Gem." He whispers again. Gem. That's the name I named him before changing it to Oreo. My hold on Kai's arms suddenly tightens. "She was all I had, and now she is gone because of him." Mr Hardin suddenly breaks down in tears and sits down on the porch.
I didn't know I am crying too until I feel my cheeks getting wet. I let go of Kai's arm and wipe my tears.
(A/N: Candice -Mr. Hardin's daughter- was almost 24 years old when she died. I don't want anyone imagining her as a 7 year old kid so I wrote it as a note here.)
