"Get your shit together, Harvey." I said  to myself in the mirror while trying to put my light brown shirt on. I was sweating from nerves and my hands were shaking while I was trying to pin the buttons.
The reaping is here and this year anyone can get raped from age 10 up. When I turned 19 I thought I won't have to worry about the reaping until I have kids but now I'm a 25 year old man and I'm shaking like a 12 year old.
"Are you ready?" My fiancee; Rose came into the room.
"Yeah, I just-" before I said anything she pinned the buttons for me.
Rose was my most important person in the world. Together we live here in a small house here in District 4. My parents died when I was 17 but she was with me the entire time. We know eachother since childhood.
"I'm stressed too." She said.
"How many slips with your name do you have there?" I asked.
"26, you?"
"50"
"You've been selling-" she angrily looked at me with her blue eyes.
"Only in past when I was young and I needed money."
She took a deep breath and put her hand on my face.
"Hav, look I need to tell you something."
"Yes?"
"I'm pregnant." She looked at me worried.
I was shocked, I was lost of words.
I'm going to be a father.
"What if they pick me?" There were tears in her eyes.
"They won't." I hugged her close and kissed her on her curly blond hair.
"I will volunteer for you. There is no gender limit so I can." I said.

...

We arrived at the reaping.
I was standing out of the crowd with my light brown hair and pale skin.
I made eye contact with Rose in the crowd. I smiled at her and she smiled back.

"Welcome, welcome!" Mona walked on the stage with her blue fancy dress and big red wig.
Behind her there were two women from our District who won the games in past. District 4 used to have a lot of visitors but most of them died from old age. There haven't been a male victor since a while.
"Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favour."
"Today we will pick two tributes who will take part in 100th Hunger Games."
"As you might know this year there is no gender limit and we chose people from age 10 up." She said.
Something was different about her than usual. She was nervous? Maybe because later she has to go the raping in District 1 were they can pick her.
"Let's begin."
Mona walked up to a big bowl and put her hand inside. She slowly took one slip and walked up back to the microphone.
"Brutus Odell!"
A tall muscular man walked out of the crowd and stand on the stage.
I don't know this man, maybe that's even better.
"Okay, let's get into the next person."
She started picking the next slip.
It felt like it was taking longer than normal.
"Harvey Powell!"
Why?
Why me?
I wanted to run away and never come back but the peacekeepers dragged me into the stage.
I looked at the crowd desperately trying to find Rose.
Don't you dare volunteer for me.
"This two brave men will represent District 4 on 100th Hunger Games and the 4th Quarter Quel!" Mona said and told us to shake hands.
Brutus didn't seem to be as scared as I was. He was strong, I could feel in in the handshake. He had really short blond hair that wouldn't be visible if not his dark skin.

...

They gave us time to say goodbye to our close ones. There was only one person I wanted to say goodbye to. Because there was only one person on this world that cares about me.
"Rose!"
She run into my arms while crying uncontrollably on my shirt.
"You have to win! You hear me? Don't you dare die!" She cried desperately.
"I will, I promise." I know I can't promise her that but what else could I do.
"I love you so much." I said and kissed her maybe for the last time.
"I love you too." She answered.

My goal now was to survive for Rose and my child.

...

Me and Brutus got on the train.
We were sitting next to eachother while waiting for our mentors.
How do I deserve this?
When my parents died I had to work on my own to live somehow. I only had Rose.
We met when I was 12. I remember how I was freaking out because of my first raping. I was crying on a bench near the beach and that was when we met. She is one year older than me so she already had her first reaping behind her. Rose sat down next to me and started chatting with and giving me sweets to calm me down. After that reaping we started hanging out a lot.
My whole life I feel like I deserve what's the worst but the only thing that proves me wrong is Rose and my future child.
"Hello," Our mentors walked in.
One of them was Penelope, she won the 97th Hunger Games by getting sponsors because she was allies even for a short time with many people from different districts. She was 16 when that happened and now she's 20.
The other was much more quiet than Penelope. Her name was Tara and she won the games by being camouflaged into the bushes for 8 days and stealing food from other tributes. In the end when there was a flood on the arena she was the most skilled swimmer which helped her survive. She won the 92nd Games at the age of 15 and she's 23 now.
"Where do we start boys." Penelope sat down, she was a little drunk but sober enough to communicate normally. She played with her red messy curly hair.
"How to win?" Brutus asked.
"Oh, slow down a little. Games aren't only about killing." She said.
Tara stayed silent.
"You need to make people adore you."
"What?"
"Make a story about yourself that people would like to follow. Be an interesting character."
"You, tell me something about yourself." Penelope pointed at me.
"Well, I'm Harvey and I'm 25. I'm an orphan and I work with my fiancee in a fish shop." I said not confidently.
"And why you should win?"
"Because I'm going to a father and I need to get married." I answered.
"Brilliant!" Penelope said happily.
I was confused.
"What?"
"You're the lucky one because you have an interesting story already!" She replied.

A lucky one.
That's the first time in my life when someone called my that.
