After Ben left my room I started unpacking my stuff and putting it into the little wardrobe to the side of my bed. The room was small, but nice. There was a bed to the left and the wooden wardrobe right next to it. It also had a full length mirror on the other side of the wall. The mirror was next to a small desk with a chair.
Everything was bulleted to the ground to keep it from swaying, this was a ship I had to remind myself. I lay down on my bed and thought about everything that happened. If I was any normal person I would be trying to get out of this place and back home, but I'm not a normal person and being away from my parents was the best thing that ever happened to me. Sometimes when my dad was at work, what he did for a living I would never know, but my mom would take me to the park and swing me on the swings. That was the happiest moment of my life. Now, anything could happen and I wasn't obliged to it.
Captain came in, stopping my thoughts. "I hope I'm not interuppting anything?" He asked politely.
"No, just thinking," I replied.
"Ok we have a job for you!" He said cheerily.
"What is it?" I asked not able to contain my curiousity. What would my job be? It's not like I'm skilled at anything.
"Follow me, and you'll find out," he said mysteriously. I just shrugged and got up. He took me to the kitchen. It was bigger than my room, but not by much. There was a refrigerator, microwave, oven, and stove. Dark wood cabinets hung on the walls.
"Umm, what are we doing in the kitchen?" I asked.
"Well your going to be our new cook of course!"
"But, Captain, I've never cooked in my life! Couldn't I have a job outside like everyone else,"
"Sorry, but we really need a cook, trust me Ben can't cook for his life. You have to be better then him. Last night he tried to make mac and cheese, all the pasta was burnt to a crisp! He swears he followed the directions, only he could mess that up while following directions!" He said chuckingly at the memory.
"Well I guess I've got to be better than him," I said hopefully.
"Great! Give it a try! All the food is in the cabinets and use anything you need,"
"What should I make?"
"Whatever you like, just remember we only have 20 crew members including yourself, so don't make too much lass," he said walking out to let me cook.
I opened the cabinets looking in to see what was there. The only thing I knew I could cook were the several boxes of pasta. Better than nothing, I thought to myself. A half hour later and the pasta was done, and I had to admit it smelled pretty darn good.
I was in the process of opening the door to find Captain, when Ben also decided it was a good time to come into the kitchen: knocking me off my feet. My arms scrabbled crazily for something to grab as I was falling. Thankfully, Ben wrapped his arms around my waist and hauled me back up like I weighed nothing. As soon as my feet were on the ground again I breathed a sigh of relief and stepped away. But, being the idiot I am, I slipped AGAIN and ended up on my butt.
"Ow...." I groaned while sitting in a very awkward position on the floor. Ben took one look at me on the floor and burst into a fit of laughter. I blushed and couldn't help but be extremely embarrassed. "I'm normally not this clumsy," I said trying to hold onto the only dignity I had left. I pushed myself off the ground and stood up, making sure that I had something, the counter, to hold onto so if I did slip again.
Now, Ben was still laughing away at my idiotic fall, so I huffed and walked out the room with my head held high to look for Captain. I stepped onto the poop deck just outside the kitchen and searched for Captain. I saw him talking to one of the crew. I waved him over and told him the food was done. He gave me a smile and told the man he was just talking to, to get the tables set up.
Before you know it, I was sitting on a long wooden table with the whole crew. Captain sitting beside me and Ben sitting across from me. Everyone seemed to enjoy my pasta, which was surprising considering I had touched it and probably accidently poisoned it. "Well, Jenna, this here is better than what Ben was tryin' to make yesterday," Captains said loud enough for everyone to hear. Ben scolded and replied with, "Hey! I thought my dinner was pretty good," Everyone just started laughing. He just stuck his tongue out and scolded at his third helping of pasta.
I smiled. I think I'm going to like it here.
