Ever since Sirius left to live with James, Regulus had felt so alone. Sirius had good reason to leave though. Walburga had found his letters to Remus, talking about being gay. She hit him, locked him up and even used the cruciatus curse. Orion turned a blind eye to her every action.

Regulus cried himself to sleep the night he ran away. Full of the feeling of abandonment. Although he'd never admit this to anyone.

-!¡!-!¡!-!¡!-

A few weeks after Sirius had left, there was a faint tapping on Regulus' bedroom window. He felt frustrated at the thought of being interrupted whilst reading but, knowing that his brother should have been in touch by now. He hopped off his small and lumpy bed to open his window when the tapping continued.

A light brown owl swooped in through the now open window and perched itself on the busy desk Regulus was using the night before. A letter now loosely attached to the owls leg.

Regulus didn't recognise the handwriting. But picked up the neatly written letter and opened it.

Dear Regulus,

We haven't met yet. I'm James Potter, Sirius' best friend.

He's safe and well. I'm writing because we have spoken and he feels horrible for leaving you there on your own. He feels so bad that he doesn't know what to say to you, so he hasn't bothered to write.

I was wondering if you would consider spending the day with him before we go back to Hogwarts. I know you probably can't, but he needs to know that you're okay. If you're worried about getting caught, bring your things. The train to Hogwarts leaves in a couple of days anyway.

Send me a reply with my familys owl to let me know if you can. I hope you do.

Sincerely,
James Potter

P.S. Either way, I shall wait at Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Shop until midday. Sirius doesn't tend to wake up until the afternoon here unless he is forced awake.

Regulus let out a sigh of relief, his brother is okay.

Waving his arm to move the owl from his desk, he sat down and dipped his quill in his ink. Reusing the letter he received, so as not to have proof of the communication, he wrote;

Dear James Potter,

My parents are going to visit the Lestrange's tomorrow. Kreacher, our house elf, has been given instructions to keep me under watch, but I'm sure he will take my word over theirs.

Sincerely,
Regulus Arcturus Black

Regulus wasn't certain if this was what he wanted to do. If his mother found out, he would be locked away until his death. He left his letter ambiguous for this reason. He knew he could change his mind.

He decided to send the letter with the now irritated owl and shut the window.

The dark had arrived and Regulus knew he needed to try and sleep. He grasped for his favourite book and read it until he felt content he could now drift off with ease.

-!¡!-!¡!-!¡!-

The next day, Regulus woke up with a pit in his stomach as deep as the shade of the clouds. He had decided that even though the consequences would be severe, he needed to see Sirius for himself.

He knew that if he was caught, he'd never be able to return. Luckily his parents had already discussed with him that they would be gone all day.

After a cold shower he got dressed, making sure he put on his plainest cloak, not that it was difficult with the range of his wardrobe.

It took him an hour to pack everything he had but once he did, he was ready to go, with one last thing to do.

"Kreacher?"

Crack.

"Yes, Master Regulus?" The elf bowed lower than ever before.

"I want you to deny to my parents that you know I'm leaving. I might be back, but I can't be certain."

Kreacher saw the trunk sitting in the corner of his masters room. He nodded and politely said, "Master has always been kind to Kreacher. Kreacher would be honoured to obey Master Regulus."

As a demonstration of his willingness, Kreacher took the trunk downstairs with another loud crack.

Regulus raced down the stairs and found his trunk next to the fireplace. He reached for the floo powder on the mantle and took a handful.

Stepping into the fireplace, he dragged his trunk towards him, gave a final nod of appreciation to Kreacher and said "Diagon Alley."

Not a moment later, Regulus was standing in the fireplace of what seemed to be the Leaky Cauldren.

In fear of being recognised, he covered his face with his cloak, rushing away as time passed by. It was 11.00am, so he knew he had a little time to spare before James left.

Why did he trust him? If James was showing up alone, without Sirius, how could he know that everything was okay?

Doubt was swelling his insides. Sirius had told him about James on a few occasions, and he spoke so highly of him. There was no reason to distrust him but his logic was crashing under his anxiety.

Walking up to the Ice Cream shop, a boy, older than Regulus stood up and faced him.

"Regulus Black?" He said.

"James Potter, I assume."

"I'll apparate us to mine. It's great that you turned up when you did, your brother woke up sooner than I thought."

James groped for Regulus' hand. Something that felt warm and graceful swept over Regulus.

After a nauseating few moments, they were inside a house. A house that Regulus knew felt more like a home than anywhere he'd ever been before.
