"Until you value yourself, you won't value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. "
M. Scott PeckCommonly,
Low self-esteem is caused by how others see you. In most of the case, specifically how your parents see you.
Your parents might be too strict about your grades. So they think, the best way to motivate you to go further is by being strict and make you do more study and reflect on yourself more. Well, I didn't say that method is wrong but I personally prefer my parents to congratulate me even with little improvement. This is because the feeling of proud and happiness of my parents is more likely to push myself towards better grades rather than my parents saying that my grades are not good enough.
As a parent, you can simply change the meaning of the sentence by just adding some extra sentences like:
"Your grades are not good enough. I know you can do better next time. But, I also have noticed that some of your grades have improved. So I would like you to keep a good job and constantly try to strive for the better."
See, that will develop the feeling of happiness towards your child.
Other than being judge by your parents, low self-esteem can be developed by negatives judgement and behaviours of others towards you. You might think that the only you can be better is by being them instead of being yourself. The others might demotivate you by saying mean things like,
"You're not good enough, you should better die rather than being alive, you should do this, you should do that."
All of those can change your perspective about yourself.
Next up, low self-esteem is also caused by trauma.
If you have ever been abused either physically or emotionally or even sexually you might develop feelings of shame and guilt. You might even think that you deserve to be abuse for something you did and that you're unworthy of love and respect.
Your body image also influences how you see yourself.
You might hate yourself for not being pretty. You might hate yourself because you don't have the "ideal body" and you also often judge yourself by the measurement of "beauty standard". Many people struggle with an eating disorder because they think that the best and fastest way to reduce their weight is by not eating. Some people even forcefully vomit their own food from their body after eating so it doesn't digest and convert into excessive fat.
They're very fun ways you can try to reduce your body weight though, in my personal opinion,
I hate exercising like running and jogging. So instead of that, I break into sweats by doing something I enjoy the most. It is dancing. Even tho I'm not a good dancer, I enjoy dancing so much. I avoid recording my dance or look into the mirror when I dance so that I don't judge myself. And I also only dance when I'm alone. Cuz I'm insecure. Like the best way to enjoy the choreography is by dancing to your fav song. I often dance to BTS songs like Idol, Mic Drop, Boy With Luv, Fire, Dynamite and many more. It motivated me.
The main key to changing yourself to be the better version of yourself is DETERMINATION.
