"So you're the head nurse in the NICU at St. Catherine?" Kevin asked casually while slicing a generous portion of the filet mignon on his plate. He would have wanted a more intimate dinner with Liz but Jeremy insisted to drive her home afterwards.
"Yes, it'll be my fifth year on November." Liz felt safe when Doctor Jeremy gave in to her subtle request for him to stay for dinner. It wasn't polite to invite him to be a third wheel but she was beyond pleasantries to worry about such things.
"How about a career at Lyndon Memorial?" Kevin was trying to bribe her to transfer to his grandfather's hospital to see if she would be swayed into his whims.
"Uh, I'm ok at St. Catherine. Thank you." She felt rather slighted with his insensitive offer. But she dared not to show just how much. Ten grand for the NICU was worth suffering a conceited handsome neurosurgeon.
Jeremy wanted to stand up and applaud her however he wasn't in the mood to create a strife with his friend. Nevertheless, he managed to catch her eye to share a sympathetic smile with her instead from across the table.
Kevin missed the scene while he was busy licking his wounded ego. Fixated on toying with the food on his plate he said, "If ever you do change your mind, there's always an opening for you."
The zipper of his pants perhaps, Liz heard her brazen sarcastic voice talking inside her head.
Kevin was getting bored with the nurse and the vapid conversation that doomed his weekend to waste. He shifted his attention to his quiet friend.
"Hey, Jeremy are you psyched about the game on Sunday?" Kevin glanced at her sitting quietly with her head bowed down seemingly uninterested to touch the food.
Kevin was disappointed with the way she seemed very unattractive tonight in her hospital scrub suit. He would have preferred if she came to his house wearing the hot red dress she had on at the auction. It would have been enticing to peel it off from her if he had the chance to be alone with her tonight.
"I'd have to pass. I've got two scheduled surgeries that day."
"Your loss, but you could join us at the club after the game for the victory party." Kevin was entirely ignoring her for the next half an hour while chattering about work with Jeremy.
