"Maribel, me and your father have to go on a business trip, a very long one," She tapped her chin, "We both have to go overseas for around three to four years,"
I brushed my brown hair out of my eyes, four years? They were right, that is a long time. "Mrs. Tallia? Where are you going?" I asked, glancing over at Maribel, their 13 year old daughter. The girl I look after.
She smiled, "Sorry Lilian, but I'm afraid that we are not allowed to say... We will call you when we get back, but until then, we want you to find a place that isn't anywhere near here, at least a days or more drive away. Okay?"
I nodded, placing a hand on Maribel's shoulder, "Okay Mrs. Tallia. When are you leaving?"
"In 5 days... so you have until then," My eyes widened, then I nodded confirmation, turning to Maribel, "Go do your homework, then we can start looking ok? I'll make us a snack."
She nodded happily, "Okay Lily!" then ran off, I chuckled turning back to the mother. "It's another mission, right?" She nodded sadly, "Yeah, but this is a Mission we don't know if we will come back from. I'm sorry..."
W-what..? They might not live... I felt tears in my eyes, she was like the mother I never had, and I know that Maribel loved both her and her father. I did too, I loved all of the Tallia family, they were like the family I always wanted, caring and supportive.
Had been put in an orphanage at the age of 3 after... the accident... My parents had abandoned me after, dropping me on the front porch with only a birthday and trauma. Lots of trauma. I had gotten over most of it over the last 19 years, but some of it still stuck with me.
I had lived at the orphanage until I was 18, moving into the Tallia house at that age. I had gotten a day-time babysitter job for Maribel at 15, moving in 3 years later, living there ever since.
I'm 22 now, and I have known Maribel for 7 years. Her parents, Kayleen and Norman were Secret agents, working for the CIA in the field, they usually got overseas missions, and a lot of them were dangerous, but rarely a danger for their lives, maybe a few thousand dollars or more from the government, but because of this, they were rarely home, that's why I'm here.
"I'm going to make a snack, then me and Maribel will look for a place," I smiled, then turned and walked into the kitchen, opening the fridge and getting our favorite, cheese and crackers thins. Welp, lets do this.

"Are you sure you are ready to go? You have everything, right? Okay good." Me, Maribel and her parents were standing in the driveway, our bags packed and ready. Maribel's father was putting their stuff in a black Toyota, while I was going to be driving a dark blue SUV.
"Yes mom, I'm sure!" Maribel grinned, hugging her mother tightly. "Alright, Lilian, can I help put your stuff in the car?" I looked to my left, Maribel's dad was already putting our suitcases into the trunk. "O-Oh! Thank you!" I stepped forward and lifted the final suitcase into the back, then stepped back and counted, 1... 2... 3... 4... 5! I nodded "Everything is here! Maribel, do you want to sit in the front or the back?"
"Back please, bye mommy, bye daddy!! Good luck!" She hugged her parents, then ran into the car, her long black ponytail flowing behind her as she shut the door, no doubt unpacking her backpack and getting out her music and books.
I sighed, Maribel's parents would never tell her, and someday, I would have to, but I really, really don't think that her parents are coming back this time. I shrugged it off and forced a smile, hiding my weaker side.
"I guess this is goodbye." I said, hugging them quickly. We got into our cars, and right before they drove off, I rolled down my window and looked at them, "I-I love you guys. Stay safe." I felt my voice crack as I fought back the small tears that slowly rolled down my cheeks, as I watched the two drive away, knowing that this could be the last time.

I yawned as we rolled into the gas station, turning off the car and getting out. I pushed the small button and opened the hatch, opening it fully and turning to the keypad.
Selecting the normal gas, I picked up the handle and put the nozzle into the hatch. I turned my head to check that it was filling, and knocked gently on the passenger window, "Mari, do you want anything?" She shook her head, and I smiled, closing my door and walking into the small store.
The neon sign was not on yet, but probably would be switched on soon, it was sunset, and we were around 2 hours away, so we would arrive around 9 at night. We had stopped for lunch at Chick-Fil-A, so I stopped at the trash can and threw out the trash.
I pushed open the door and walked to the back of the store, opening one of the fridges and taking out two Diet Mountain Dews, then walked to one of the shelves and took two bags of cheesy popcorn, me and Maribel's favorite snack.
I walked up to the front, placing the items on the counter and taking out my credit card. "Hello." The cashier looked up and scanned the items, "Your total is $10.46." I nodded and put the card in the reader.
'Card approved!' The machine chimed, and I slid the card back into my pocket. "Thank you! Come again soon!" The cashier said, handing me the bag of stuff. I nodded, saying a quiet, "Thank you!" I smiled, walking and pushing the glass door open, making my way to the car.
I took the nozzle and placed it back next to the keypad, unlocking the car and getting in, passing the snack and drink to Maribel. "Here, we are only two hour away." She squealed, "Yay!!" I chuckled, putting the key in and turning it, turning on the car and putting it in drive. "Next stop! our new home!"
