Don't Fuck With Unicorns

We sneak through the forest. The hunting party, minus Merlin and I, all have crossbows. Arthur heard something so he's planning on surrounding it. He signals for the men to go around and circle it then beckons me and Merlin over.

"What is it?" I ask in a whisper.

"Dunno," Arthur whispers back. "I want you two to go in and flush it out."

I give him a blank look. Merlin gives him a look of disbelief. "You just said that you don't know what it is. What if it's dangerous?" Merlin asks.

"That's why I'm sending Y/n with you," Arthur answers. I sense of pride fills me and I can't stop the smug smile that stretches my face. Now I want to go in there and be the bird dog.

"Works for me," I whisper. "Let's go, Mer-dog." Merlin rolls his eyes and we both ignore Arthur's confused look.

We continue seeking through the forest, looking for the thing we are hunting. I draw out a dagger I snuck from the armoury and Merlin picks up a large stick.

We round a corner and freeze.

I... I can't believe it.

It's... It's a unicorn.

It's beautiful. It's gorgeous. The living embodiment of majesty.

I sheath the dagger and slowly approach it.

"Y/n," Merlin hisses a word of caution.

"It's fine," I say back. I keep going until I'm an arms reach away. "Hello," I say softly. "May I?" I raise my palm the same way Hiccup does with Toothless. The unicorn bows its head, allowing me to pet it. I let out a breath of pure joy when I touch its fur. It's softer than silk and pure white. Its hair and tail have a silver sheen that flickers in the sunlight. Its eyes are a stunning blue-gray; like wispy clouds decorating the sky.

"You're incredible," I coo as Merlin slowly approaches too. He also places a hand on its snout. He, like me, lets out a breath of pure euphoria.

Wait...

Arthur.

Shit. "You have to run," I tell the beast. It doesn't move. "Please, run. They'll kill you." The sound of a crossbow being aimed comes from my left. "Arthur! NO!"

Too late.

The arrow flies through the air and lodges itself in the unicorn's lung. I drop to my knees and try to soothe it.

"It'll be okay. You'll be fine. I'm so sorry," I coo until it closes its eyes and releases its final breath. Oh, I'm going to murder Arthur for this.

Speak of the devil, the prince himself waltzes up to his prize with a huge grin. "Ha! A unicorn!"

Anger riles up inside me. "Well done, your highness," I say with venom in my voice. "You're a monster."

"Oh calm down, Y/n," Arthur brushes it off. "It's just an animal."

"Oh, I oughta-!" Merlin grabs my shoulder and holds me back. We share a look and his eyes tell me not to do anything stupid. He's right, I can't expose myself.

After taking a calming breath we both turn back to Arthur but instead, our gazes fall on a man behind him. An old man in a white robe and holding a staff.

"What are you looking at?" Arthur asks as he turns around. But then the man is gone. Like he was never there.

Merlin and I meet eyes. We have a silent conversation, asking if we saw the man. Yes. This is weird. And bad. Very bad.

The knights removed the poor beast's horn and gave it to me to hold. I don't want to. I don't want anything to do with the murder of the unicorn.

We arrive back in Camelot and immediately go to the king's courtroom. I'm holding the horn on a red velvet pillow. Merlin is trailing behind me with a worried look and I am trying so hard not to look enraged at the crime committed.
