I watched the pretty doctor walk out of the room as a struggled to get myself into the wheelchair. "I don't think I should be on my feet this soon after labor" I mumbled. Still I tucked my phone into my bra and managed to roll out of the room and down the hall. Everything was so calm and still. It felt as if the world around me was moving in slow motion until finally I reached the elevator door. I pressed the up button and the button turned red. Almost immediately the elevator opened and I rolled myself in and pressed the "6" button. Never has elevator music ever been more aggravating, the most beautiful saxophone playing I've ever heard was replaced with the sound of nails on a chalk board and within two seconds of being in the elevator I could feel myself tense up and turn red with frustration. Trying to tune out the annoying sounds I watched the the digital screen on the wall count what floor the elevator reaches.
"3.....4.....5" then the elevator stopped and opened. Standing in front of me was Hakiem. His shirt was ripped and he had a small streak of blood running down his arm. Dried tears stained his face, trailing over his bruised cheek. "Hey Kiem." I said as he walked in. "You're going up?"
"Danny who let you out of bed? And yea, I thought I go and see Angie."
"Right. Angie. You're little baby girl."
"Danny don't give me that." Hakiem said, rolling his eyes. The elevator opened and Hakiem rolled me out. "Look Danyelle. There is nothing I love more in this world than you and that baby." He bent down and put his hands in my lap. "Without you I have nobody. Okay? You're everything to me. But I made a mistake. And no matter how hard I cry and how bad I beg, I can't take it back. So I'm apologizing. You can either forgive me so we move on from here, or we go our separate ways. It's up to you. But baby I'm telling you I'm sorry."
I looked Hakiem's eyes and I sensed the sincerity. "I love you too Hakiem. You're right. We're all we got in this world. You forgave me, so I forgive you. But do you really have to visit her?" I asked.
"Yes Danny. You beat her ass kind of bad I have to go see how she's holding up."
"Okay Kiem." I pouted. "Whatever you say. I have to see Mother Dearest and see what she wants so I'll see you soon."
"I forgot all about that. You want me to come? Angie can wait."
"No it's okay Kiem I got it you go ahead. Bye." He waved back at me and we went our separate ways. I rolled my way down the down the hall until I reached room 6F. I hesitated for a minute before I finally knocked on the door. There was no answer but I heard muffled noises from her room. I listened for a minute then my anxiety took over and I reached for the doorknob. Her door was open so I went in. The room was empty. A wind of cold swept over me. Then my phone vibrated in my bra. It was Hakiem.
HAVE YOU SEEN ANGIE?
