Gerard's birthday was coming up, and Frank wanted to do something special to celebrate. Normally, Frank likes to take Gerard to his house or the pizza restaurant downtown, but this year he wanted to go above and beyond. Frank bought two tickets to their local art museum for them to spend the day walking around in. When they arrived at the museum, the outside exterior looked mundane and even boring. It was a massive stone building and the only interesting feature it had was one banner draped above the doorway. When they got inside however, Frank was blown away by the sumptuous architecture and sculpted engravings on each of the walls. Frank knew little to nothing about art history, but Gerard had a penchant for drawing, painting, and studying the techniques of other artists. Gerard had a certain idiosyncrasy about him that Frank thought made him totally weird; Gerard would bounce around from room to room until he found a painting he really liked, and then would stare at it for minutes. Frank loved him for that weird, nerdy eagerness. Although Frank felt like the meaning behind most of the art he saw was esoteric and forbidden knowledge, he was fascinated by how some artists were able to delineate authentic human emotion. In one painting there was a depraved man depicted with monster-like features poisoning a waterhole, and the following one displayed a hallowed knight fighting an army for his kingdom. There were also paintings of vast landscapes with fecund fields of grass and greenery that Gerard and Frank both got lost in for hours. Frank even thought he could feel the eyes of the bust sculptures and statues following him as he walked by, which turned out to be just a figment of his imagination. By the time they finished walking around the museum it was already past dark. The two of them went home and for the next week Frank and Gerard couldn't stop talking about the crazy paintings and sculptures they saw together.
