III. BUCKBEAK

Winnie started eating on an apple while she was attending Hagrid's class. She was very fond of the man, he'd been there her first year and was always nice. One time, she even helped him with a mandrake problem he had going on in his garden. She looked forward to hear about more creatures. Winnie loved animals of any kind, of course the Malfoys never let her have a cat; just her owl. His name was Mercury. She remembered listening to the muggle radio with Remus and declaring her favorite singer was Freddie Mercury. Winnie was one of the first ones to show, and Hagrid had been the one to give Winnie the apple. She was thankful - she hadn't eaten much at breakfast. She had her copy of The Monster Book of Monsters, which she hadn't been sure of how to open it until Cedric and Sabrina told her to stroke the spine. Winnie often found herself wondering what it would have been like if she had started school when she was eleven, instead of thirteen.

"Everybody meet Buckbeak. He's a Hippogriff. First thing you wanna know about Hippogriffs, is that they are very proud creatures. Very easily offended. If you insult them, it might be the las' thing yeh ever do. Now," Hagrid paused, looking around the class. "who wants to say hello?" Everyone stepped back except for Harry. Winnie was just scared Buckbeak would react badly to her scent. Dumbledore said that creatures could recognize other creatures.

Winnie watched as Harry bowed to the creature, and her eyes widened when Hagrid sat him on top of the Hippogriff, letting him take a ride. Harry looked terrified. When they took off, she noticed how worried Hermione looked. "Don't worry. I've read that Hippogriffs are softies at heart." She said, offering a smile to Hermione. Hermione smiled back at her. They hadn't really got to talk that much on the train, and Hermione pitied the girl. She seemed to hate the Malfoys, yet she had to live with them. "Thanks, Winnifred."

"No problem, and please, call me Winnie."

When Harry returned, Draco seemed to be jealous of the attention that Harry was getting, and made his way to the front of the class.

"You're not dangerous at all, are you? You great ugly brute." Draco went to get Buckbeak's attention, but the Hippogriff didn't like that. It stood up on its hind legs and brought his talons down on Draco's arm.

"It's killed me! It's killed me!" He screamed, and Winnie rolled her eyes. "In my dreams."

Hagrid dismissed the class, carrying Draco to the hospital wing.

"About time you two showed up!" Ravenclaw's captian, Roger Davies shouted as Winnie and Sabrina walked onto the quidditch field. Winnie was a chaser, and Sabrina was a beater. Their seeker was Cho Chang but she wasn't nearly as good as Harry, who was the seeker for Gryffindor. Draco was Slytherin's seeker, and Cedric was Hufflepuff's.

"We're only a minute late, Davies." Sabrina said, looking at her watch. Luna was going to come and watch them practice, but her shoes suddenly went missing. Davies never let Cedric or Prim watch because he was scared they would steal their tactics.

"Mount your brooms!" Winnie's broom was one of the best. Though Lucius loathed the girl, he wouldn't have people thinking the family was poor, even if she wasn't their daughter. She knew what Lucius thought about anything less than half-bloods, but she had told the man she was still proud to have Sabrina Thawne as a friend, though she was muggle-born. It never ended well when they talked, but Winnie wouldn't ever hide who her friends were. She wasn't ashamed.

After changing out of her quidditch uniform, she made her way to the great hall for dinner with Sabrina. Cedric had invited them to sit at the Hufflepuff table. Winnie wasn't exactly sure it was allowed, but the professors never said anything, so Winnifred sat their whenever she was invited. "You look rough, what happened to you?" Prim asked, shoving food into her mouth. Cedric looked at Prim, his eyes wide.

"What I think she's trying to say, is you've got a cut on your face, and you seem tired. Are you okay?" Cedric asked, and Prim laughed. She was much like her sister, Nymphadora, who said things without caring what people said.

"Padma knocked me off my broom. Nearly got Sabrina, too." Seeing Cedric's concerned face, she chuckled. "Don't worry, Ced, we weren't very high up."

"Not the best flyer, is that Patil girl?" Prim asked.

"Eh, she's not really to blame. Davies is so stressed about the match with Gryffindor that he's got everyone working on overdrive. Mental, that one is." Sabrina said, digging into some food.  While talking to her friends, she thought of Remus teaching her grade's class for the first time. It brought a smile to her face. Cedric noticed, thinking there was nothing prettier. Her smile could light up a room. Cedric had always thought Winnie was lovely.

There was a commotion happening at the Gryffindor table, but Winnie didn't pay much attention to it.

"Are you excited about the Hogesmade trips this year, Winnie? Cedric asked. She was about to reply, when she noticed the Gryffindor students staring at her intensely.

"Merlin's ear hair, why are they staring at me?" She asked, dropping her fork. Prim turned around, standing up. "Oi, what's your problem?"

Fred Weasley was the one to reply.

"Sirius Black has been sighted not far from here."
