Six fluttered her eyes open, now starting to wake up, even though it was still dark outside. Six let out a small gasp as she noticed that the spot next her was empty. Where's Mono?
She sat up a little more, her sore and tired muscles struggling, but she managed. She felt a yawn coming on, but fought it back as she panicked, her eyes looking around for the paper-bagged boy.
"Mo.. Mono?" She attempted to yell out, but it only came out as a small mix between a whimper and a screech, her throat felt sore and dry.
Not being able to speak, she groggly sat up from the floor. Her legs shook as she stood up and put the pressure of her small body on them.
Six squatted down a bit as she made her way out from the crack, careful as to not hit her head. She moved her body to the outside, placing a hand on the side of the crack. It was dark, really dark.
She blinked a couple times trying to adjust them to the dark. She shot her eyes around the darkness, still no Mono.
With no other options, she tried to yell out his name again. "Mo..no," she whimpered again, but this time a little louder, her throat ached and she held back a soft cough.
She waited for a bit, listening for anything. Then she heard something.. footsteps. Six backed up a bit towards the crack in the wall, her hand still on the cool concrete next to her.
The footsteps grew louder, getting closer.
Six flinched as a sudden bright light blinded her, only lasting for a second before it went away.
"What's wrong!?" Six looked up, Mono was now standing in front of her, just at the edge of the building.
Relived, Six's eyes were starting to tear up, the relief, fear, and tiredness all now starting to hit her like a wave.
Not sure if Mono had noticed or not, he began to walk towards her, putting his flashlight away.
Once he was close enough to her, Six used her strength to give Mono a swift punch to the stomach, not hard enough to hurt him but hard enough to let him know that she was upset.
Mono took a couple steps back, shocked.
"Wh- Where wer-" she squeaked again, her throat was burning but she didn't care now, the anger taking over.
Mono noticed she was struggling to speak, so he cut her off, not letting her finish. "I couldn't sleep so I was just out looking for something useful, like food or some shortcuts or something."
Six's eyes were still teared, she still held it back, not wanting to cry in front of him.
Mono hesitantly made his way back towards her. She dragged his feet forward as Six looked down at the ground in front of her, blinking back tears, but Mono didn't noticed with the thick black bangs covering her face and the darkness of the night.
Six glanced up from the floor, now facing Mono, the bag still over his head. They were so close, no more than a foot away.
Mono rose his hand up, going to place it on her cheek, but quickly changed his mind, placing it on her shoulder instead.
Six glanced down, not being able to contain the tears or anger anymore. She cried out softly, staring at the dark cold ground as she tried to pull herself together, but she couldn't. She thought he had left her. After all that just to leave, but he didn't.
Mono bent down, just a small bit to be able to catch a glance of her eyes.
"Hey, hey look at me," he whispered, very softly. He moved his hand from her shoulder to her cheek, as he had wanted to a while ago, and he tilted her head up to face him. Mono started to feel a small, strange, heat rush to his face, but he just brushed it off, focusing on Six.
Six obliged, letting Mono lift her head, not fighting it. Her bangs still covered her eyes, but Mono was able to catch a couple glances of the tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Nothing happened to me, I'm okay. We're okay," he tried to comfort. "I probably should have told you I was going out, but I didn't want to wake you. I'm sorry, Six."
She stared at the bag on his head, hearing the sincerity in his voice. Her cries had stopped, but the remaining tears continued to roll down her cheeks.
Mono, his hand still placed on her cheek, wiped her tears away with his thumb. The rush of heat he felt became stronger, he removed his hand from her, placing it back by his side.
Six softly sighed, a small yawn following behind.
Mono giggled. "Still tired?" She just nodded and shrugged a bit. "It's still dark, wanna head back to sleep?" But she declined, shaking her head left to right.
Mono knew she couldn't keep going if she was still tired, he knew she needed to rest. They both did.
He sighed. "I'll stay with you, I promise. I should probably try and get some sleep too." Six just stared at him, only breaking eye contact for a second to think, wary that he could leave again. She wasn't sure.
Before she could say anything, if she was even going to, Mono slowly grabbed her hand, gripping hers in his. "Let's go back in," he whispered, giving her hand a slight squeeze. She just yawned again.
They made their way into the cracked wall once again, ducking down. Six walked in first, Mono following behind.
Six slid down into the same spot she had just been in moments earlier, Mono did the same right next to her. He sat close to her, but far enough away that she wouldn't feel uncomfortable.
The two sat in the dark silence for a bit, having nothing to say.
A strong gust of wind blew, it's seemed as if it would rain again soon.
Six shivered, the coverage from her gray sweater and white shorts not enough to keep her warm. She crossed her arms around her legs, her legs pulled up by her chest. She shivered more and more.
Mono noticed this, surprised he did with how dark it was. "You okay?" He asked, she nodded. "Here take this," Mono leaned forward a bit, removing his coat from his body.
He held it out to her, waiting for her to take it, but she never did. She placed her hand on his fist that was gripping the coat, and she pushed it back towards him.
"I'll be fine, you need it more than me," he tried to explain to her, but she refused to take it, probably feeling guilty if she did.
Mono placed the coat back into his lap, not wanting to force her to do anything. Six hugged her legs tighter, her head tilting towards the right, close to where Mono was. Her head was so close to his shoulder, but not quite close enough to touch.
Mono took a deep breath, taking in the sour scent of the polluted dark air. Better than the scent of death I suppose.
He looked over to the little girl next to him, who was already fast asleep. Mono just sighed, he rested his head against the rough wall behind him. He closed his eyes, focusing on the small peaceful breaths of Six.
He relaxed a bit, his mind starting to relax as he, along with Six, fell into a deep, much needed, sleep.
