The support group meeting day had changed.
Louis' mother had dropped him off before the building, and was already driving away by the time he walked out of the car door. And by the time he figured out the meeting had changed after reading the sign on the door, she was already out of the parking lot.
Feeling defeated, he watched the back lights of her car, not finding a reason to try and call out her name. For a second, he thought about calling her. But a second later, he figured out that he left his phone in her car.
He looked around at his surroundings. There wasn't much he could do to pass the time, and the cold weather wasn't helping his situation, but there was a bench that was calling his name. He took a seat on it and placed his hand in his pockets.
With tired eyes, he watched as the sun was beginning to set and the bright colors were starting to dim to get ready for the stars and darkness. In the direction of where the sun was setting, trees were placed in an area that somehow created a shadow over the sun.
Louis continued to watch over the glow begin to get dimmer and even more until there was barely anything left. And as he watched it, he remained sitting there. And he would have continued to sit there but then he heard someone behind him. "I guess you found out it was also changed too."
He turned to face the person calling his name, and when that person walked under a streetlamp that was beginning to glow, he got a clear view of who it was.
"Niall?"
Niall gave him a small smile, and went to stand on the other side of the bench. Silently, Louis gestured for him to sit.
"I thought we would have gotten a form or some type of notice," Louis mumbled.
Niall nodded beside him. "I think we were supposed to."
He still hadn't taken the note to sit even though Louis gestured for him to. So he nodded again to the bench next to him. Finally, Niall understood what he meant and took a seat.
They sat next to each other in silence. The silence grew comfortable, and they each enjoyed the quiet and the sound of the wind circling around them. After some time, Niall asked him a question.
"Is someone coming to pick you up?" He asked.
"No," Louis admitted. "I forgot my phone in my mother's car."
"Would you like to borrow mine to call her?" He asked, lifting his phone from his pocket.
Louis appreciated the gesture, but declined. Calling her wouldn't be worth it because of the nagging and annoyance he would receive from her end because this would have been an inconvenience to her. Even though Louis never got a notice about the day changing. In his mother's eyes, this would somehow be his fault. And she would make sure he knew that.
"Is anyone coming to pick you up?" Louis asked him.
Niall shook his head. "It isn't worth the hassle, and I like the quiet I get." He looked around the area, the sun finally beginning to completely set. "And at least this time I won't be alone."
Louis nodded, giving him a small smile at what he said, but his mind was focusing on something else. "This time? You've done this before?"
The man beside him grimaced. "I-I'm not good at remembering things."
"How many times have you done this?"
"Including tonight? Five times."
Louis tried not to focus too much on the fact that Niall has been often forgetting when the dates change, and focus on the fact that he could call to go home, but would rather spend the time sitting next to Louis instead. That small yet kind gesture made Louis feel something on the inside.
"How are you liking it?"
Louis turned to meet his eyes. "The support group?" Niall nodded. "It's...different."
Fortunately, the answer seemed to please Niall because he didn't ask for anything further. He did add a comment though. "Even though you have only talked once."
His eyes instantly widened. Did Niall tell a joke? Judging by the reddened cheeks on his face, and the fact that he seemed slightly embarrassed and patiently waiting for the reaction from him seemed to appear that he was.
The joke wasn't much to laugh at, but the fact that he was attempting to try to make one made Louis laugh. Niall smiled in response to Louis' reaction.
"Thanks," he whispered to him, and Louis knew it was more than just laughing at his joke.
For the remainder of the time, they continued to sit next to each other. They spoke softly to one another, and they spoke about anything and everything.
After the time that the support group would be over, Louis could see a car coming up to them slowly. A second later, Niall got up. The older looking car came to a full stop in front of them and before Niall went to get in, he turned. "Thanks for staying with me."
Louis smiled. "You're welcome."
Niall gave him a small wave, and got in. The car sped off, and Louis watched until it turned the corner and the headlights could no longer be seen. Now that Niall was gone, he noticed how dark it was. There was one streetlamp near him that gave off some light, but the rest of the area was dark. Usually the lights in the building would be on, so that would be another source of light that wouldn't make the area appear so dark. But with the lights completely off, he only had the one single streetlamp to help him with seeing for when his mother would arrive.
His mother hadn't arrived until a long time later. Or a long time later according to him, because without his phone, he didn't have an exact idea. But he was thankful when she did arrive.
He got himself into the car, and situated. She soon took off without speaking to him, and as they were turning the corner, she said something.
"I didn't mean to pick you late." She huffed. "But how was it?"
He felt her gaze, and he turned to give her a weak smile. "Good." She nodded, turning her head back to face the road, and he turned his head to look out the window. He saw his reflection in the window. "Good," he whispered again to himself.
