Yo. We're gonna be trying a 30 day oneshot prompt list, but going out of order, so i'm starting with "drowning". I tried lol

The impact knocked the air out of his lungs, pain shooting through his back. The vast expanse of nothingness clouded his senses, stinging his eyes. Red swirled around the dark, murky void as he drew in a breath, only to be met with water.
He couldn't die like this. No, not after everything they did to get here.
Darkness danced at the edges of his vision as he struggled to kick off his shoes, his eyes narrowed. At this point, any direction could be up. Taking one moment to steel himself, he kicked towards what he hoped was the surface.
Pain shot through his head as he fought the urge to take another mouthful of water. Any slight movement just drained more and more of his energy, and there was no way to tell if he was actually making any progress.
So instead, he sank further and further into darkness.
