Chapter 25

Countless standing congratulatory bouquets lined the hallway leading to the exhibition area.
The parking lots were full and many had to park a little further than two blocks of streets. Inside the pavilion number 25, the interior walls were painted classic white, transformed like a traditional art gallery, however the subject matter spoke an entirely different language. A single canvas hung on each of the white panels whose locations were purposefully juxtaposed around the spaces to resemble a labyrinth. There were other special exhibits in this area aside from XiaoZhan's. The pavilion hosted Y city's annual art exihibition. Xiaozhan's bestie SongZhicheng was one of the organizers in this annual prestigious artists exhibition that attracted visitors and art critiques from all over the country, and even some overseas visitors. The work showcased local artists' talents and diversity, providing a platform for greater exposure of their works. Zhi Cheng had repeatedly asked Xiaozhan to join but he had been hestitant about it since deep inside he somewhat lacked the confidence to showcase his private works to be displayed under such grand scale. It was only after Yibo moved out of Y city that XiaoZhan actualy agreed mainly so he could bury himself in more work so as not to think so much about Yibo.

Xiaozhan had his own private collection which he sold to people who had come to his studio and saw the work for himself. He had occasionally dropped off some works into Zicheng's gallery which piqued the interest of many customers. But when Zicheng saw Xiaozhan's attic filled with a special series of paintings he had never seen before, he knew by instinct that they deserved an exhibition. In fact, those paintings were done in a modernized impressionism style that Xiaozhan had taken a liking to. Xiaozhan had kept these series hidden and never bothered to sell them because they were either too personal to him or did not feel were good enough to be showcased. As a result a good volume of them had been stacked in the attic piled on top of one another, gathering dust and doomed to remain insignificant and forgotten. Meanwhile, Zicheng who was rummaging through Zhan's stuff gathering inspiration became excited all of a sudden by the discovery of these 'set of romantic pantings' as what he had called them. Most of the paintings put together could be made into a complete series- the Individual pieces seemed to be part of a single storyline. They were mostly colorful silhouettes of either a person or an object. The objects were inanimate yet presented in a way that evoked a certain sentiment like as if it held greater meaning. Meanwhile, that person's true face was hidden behind the vigorous brush strokes and vibrant colors, some showed movements, his back against a scenic backdrop, but none had shown the person's face clearly- According to Zicheng, the overall mood for the works were in harmony. The colors were sometimes subtle and other times slightly vibrant. But they all evoked a certain sentiment in the viewer's perspective. Truth be told, Xiaozhan had drawn these almost like a diary. Everytime that person made him feel sad or happy or something happened between them that he wanted to remember, Xiaozhan would paint that feeling. Two years of work on painting his experiences with that person had resulted in numerous canvasses enough to make a single themed exhibition. It wasn't until Zhicheng repeatedly told him that the intention was merely for publicity's sake instead of selling them that Xiaozhan finally relented- he wasn't ready to part with any in this series since they had represented a cherished memory. Later on, ZhiCheng had him made a few more outside of the series for sales purposes and those had kept him busy for a few months.
