Chapter 33: shutter

On this day, Xiaozhan was sorting through the mail when he caught sight of Wangji's letters. It stood out among the others because the envelope from this particular company had a familiar logo that Xiaozhan easily recognized. It was a popular travel magazine and was stacked up in one corner of the study unopened. Curious, Xiaozhan opened one and was surprised to find the job offers Wangji had been rejecting. They were all lucrative offers with good remuneration and exposure.

He opened the desk computer and searched for Wangji's name in the search engine. It was the first time Xiaozhan actually did something like this. But curiosity finally got the better of him. After all, they had been living together for almost a year now and he wanted to know more about Wangji. The search result actually surprised him. One of the headlines that struck him in particular read "award winning nature photographer quit", "Young talent wasted in commercial field" or something along those lines. The article was not an honest one and appeared to have been purposefully written for sensation, only at the latter half it did say that Wangji moved to do commercial shots and that commercial shots were not honest since it had propaganda purposes while photographers of nature only produce 'honest' materials.

Xiaozhan recalled conversations they had in the past where he had asked if Wangji missed nature photography. He had brushed him off at the time telling him that he wanted to expand his portfolio and try out commercials and that settling down in the city was not a bad thing. Xiaozhan had believed him at the time and quickly brushed off the topic. But after several articles, Xiaozhan could not help but wonder he had stopped travelling the world for his sake. After all, by now, Xiaozhan was well acquaintances with Wangji's feelings for him. Wangji was a good partner who was always sensitive to Xiaozhan's needs and supportive of his dreams. But how did Wangji see him? Had he reciprocated his goodness the same way?

Wangji did mention that he used to travel around for his job but he no longer did and instead, preferred to settle in this place and took on local commercial jobs. Xiaozhan often overheard Wangji rejecting overseas job a few times before but did not really think much about it until now. He wondered if Wangji did not trust him very much to leave him for a little while. Thinking of the possibility that Wangji was no longer pursuing his dreams for his sake, Xiaozhan could not help feeling guilty.

Their relationship for the past year had been harmonious and stable. Emotionally, Xiaozhan had felt very secure. Sexually, they had not progressed further than kissing. At first, Xiaozhan thought they were both content with purely emotional relationship mainly because he wanted them to be different than Yibo and him who had only sexual relationship. Wangji had shown him that even emotional relationship could be extremely fulfilling. It was fulfilling indeed that compared to the past, Xiaozhan felt more stable and was somewhat felt much happier than he ever did when he was with Yibo. What Xiaozhan did not realize was that he was preoccupied with his own happiness that he stopped considering Wangji might feel unfulfilled. Right until that day, that day when they kissed and Xiaozhan felt the bulge in Wangji's pants pushing against Xiaozhan. He thought that at that moment he had been wrong- so wrong. Wangji was a male at his prime, how could he not have any sexual desire for Xiaozhan?

Since then, Xiaozhan had been thinking about the issue. Wangji had been a really sweet partner and Xiaozhan thought he should also consider taking a step further in their ambiguous relationship. Perhaps.. perhaps its okay to give himself another chance to experience their relationship sexually. Since the thought, Xiaozhan had been nervous all week. He could not wait for the weekend where he could put his plans into action.
