Jade Thompson

It's my first day in London. I'm a bit jet lagged but that's not what I need to be concerned about.

No one has told me anything. I'm completely in the dark. I got called into my bosses office and the next thing I know I was on a plane to London.

I've been shown to my apartment. I'm not paying for it so that's great. It's a 1 bedroom apartment and it's quite nice. Once I unpack it will feel more like home, but again these are things for the future. I need to figure out what's going on here.

I've been instructed to arrive at headquarters at 4:15. It's currently 2:41. I don't know how traffic is around here but I'll find out soon enough.

*****

I have to say traffic is not bad, but I would hate to see it during rush hour. The traffic here is definitely heavier than in Virginia. I've arrived at headquarters and it's a beautiful building. Oddly shaped though, and it looks like it would be a doozy to navigate.

I park my car and make my way to the front doors, there are a lot of guards and I don't look like I belong here, this could go the wrong way very quickly. I received a badge when I arrived here that might come in handy if anything happens to go south.

Just like I predicted one of the guards holds out his hand and says "Excuse me miss but we're going to need to see some identification.'

I dig into my purse and retrieve my badge, it has all my information and a little picture of me, I really hope they'll let me retake that photo, it was from when I first started and I was having a rough day. I hand him my badge, he quickly examines it before handing it back to me and wishing me a good day.

I walk past them. Stopping at the doors to swipe my key card, that's something universal. The small button on the scanner turns green and I hear the click of the door unlocking. I walk through the doors and into the lobby. I stop at the front desk where a woman is sitting, she looks to be in her early 50's. The name tag on the desk reads 'Marilyn Peters'.

"Hello I'm Jade Thomp-"

"Oh I know who you are sweetie it popped up on my computer when you scanned your key card at the door" she says with a smile. "You need to go up to the 36th floor. Agent Turner is expecting you, I'll let him know you've arrived." She motions towards the elevators on the far wall.

"Thank you Ms.Peters, I do have a question though." I don't really have a question as curious as I am about this whole situation. I'm stalling. I don't know what brought me here so suddenly but I know it can't be good.

"You can call me Marilyn sweetie, but please ask any questions you have." she says in a welcoming tone.

"Well uh this might seem silly but do you know of any good coffee shops here." It's the only thing I could think of asking but it will come in handy once I have some actual work to do.

"I actually do! I'll tell you what, let me find the address and I can send it to you. Also I have a quick question for you, your accent is absolutely adorable, where are you from?" She seemed genuinely excited when she asked.

"Oh I'm from Paris." I probably should've been clearer because the face she made was of pure confusion.

"You're French?" she asked.

"Oh no I was born in Paris Texas" I say feeling my cheeks get hot due to how embarrassing this is.

She lets out a short laugh at my reply "Well sweetie as fun as this has been you ought to get going, Agent Turner is expecting you to be there by now."

I give her a wave and make my way towards the elevators.

It must be some expensive government elevator or something because that thing flew. It felt like I was in the elevator for less than a minute. As great as that might sound a long elevator ride was just what I needed.Time to calm my nerves. Instead I stood in front of Agent Turner's door trying to muster the courage to enter.

I was there for a good 5 minutes before I knocked on the door and a gruff voice replied " Come in".

I turned the knob on the door and entered. I awkwardly stand there and he stares at me for a moment before saying " Agent Thompson, have a seat you have a lot to catch up on"

He didn't have to say it I already knew. It's been on my mind all day. I'm used to knowing the solution. I'm used to knowing what's going on. I'm used to being the one that's causing fear.

That didn't sound quite right. I mean I'm used to causing fear in criminals. Any case that's brought to me is solved. So here's a tip, if you ever commit a crime you'd better hope I'm not the one who's assigned to solve the case.

He hands me a thick file and I am in absolute shock. My eye scans the case file in front of me.

"What is this?" I ask hoping for some kind of an answer to this whole mystery.

"That Agent Thompson is what brought you here. That file in front of you is pretty famous around here. We refer to it as the ' Robin Hood case'. It's a silly name I know but there's a reason for it. It's a little hard to explain but it's one of the certainties in this case. There's a lot we haven't been able to figure out but this was a big discovery. Alright I'll stop building it up, whoever this is commits a lot of crimes. Sometimes they steal, and when it's not an item something odd happens. Let's say they steal $10,000 dollars alright, well exactly 7 hours later Action For Children receives that exact donation from someone named 'ace'. This might sound odd and you might not see the connection but it will make sense once you read the file." He ends his rant with a soft smile.

If we ever caught whoever this is, I don't mean to be dark but i don't know if they'd ever see the light of day again. How much did someone have to do to have this thick of a file. I scan the first few pages and it only gets worse. Robberies. Assault.Hacking. Torture. Drug dealing. Murder. " How have they not been caught yet" I mumble.

"That's what we don't know and we need all the help we can get which is why I asked for you to be transferred here." he says flatly.

"You.. requested my transfer?" I looked up at him very confused by the fact that he would even admit that to me.

"Yes Agent Thompson I did, but you need to be focusing on this case." he says trying to keep me on the right track.

I'm still flipping through the file before I stop on a page that has a card attached to it by a paper clip. I slide the card out of the clip before spinning it in my fingers examining it.

It's an ace of spades. I look up towards Agent Thompson and ask "why is there a card here."

" Ah yes the good old ace of spades. We haven't been able to figure out the significance but it's a marker. We know that a Robin Hood crime is a Robin Hood crime because an ace of spades is always left at the crime scene. We actually have a box of them but I'll have that delivered to your office later."

"Office?" I say genuinely confused. I didn't have my own office in Virginia so I didn't expect to have one here.

"Yes. Office. I'll have Marilyn show you to it." he motions towards the door as my cue to leave.

Before I walk through the door he says "Oh and Agent Thompson, you're going to need to change that shoelace."

I look down to my converse, one of the laces is pink the other is a generic white. I look up and give him an awkward smile before turning and closing the door.

As I enter the hallway I'm greeted by the same warm smile from the lobby.

"You know I'm happy you're here we could use some more women around here."

"Thanks Marilyn." She really has no idea how much that means to me.

////Yay a backstory, of sorts...I wanted to get this over with early so yall know whats going on lol.////
