The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was the sun streaming through the balcony windows. The queen was not normally a morning person, and so it was to even her own surprise that she felt inclined to get up. As she stretched her arms above her head, she let out a yawn. What she really needed right now was a cup of coffee, only Granny's diner had been left in Storybrooke. As strange as it seemed, Regina almost missed her strange, cursed town, and its even stranger inhabitants. Well, Henry at least.
It had been almost a year since she'd seen his little face, and was getting slightly worried she wouldn't have that privilege again. Luckily, with the Dark One free from her sister's wrath, he had been able to provide a way back to their land. And although Regina missed her son with every inch of her being, part of her loved the life she had here. The life she had made Nila, Robin and even Roland, who had come to accept her as his father's girlfriend. Even thinking about the outlaw and his son made her blush. Roland was honestly the sweetest boy, once you had got to know him, and his rosy cheeks and dimples reminded her heavily of his father's.
Speaking of, she glanced over her left shoulder and fully took in the fact he was laying right next to her. The queen leaned over, her eyes full of love, and placed a gentle kiss on his temple. Robin didn't seem to wake, something she was partially grateful for. Regina liked the moments where she could just reflect on her surroundings. She would sometimes take a walk, or take a ride with her daughter, and just relive her childhood in the most regal ways possible.
She thought about how far she'd come since waking up in absolute misery and dreading the day before her. Dreading the days where her husband would magically remember she existed and force her to come out on some kind of family outing. Unfortunately for her, this meant Snow came too, which never bode too well for her sanity.
The queen suddenly felt a cool breeze of air on her bare shoulders and shivered. Maybe it was just the memory of her past life, or the fact that she hadn't remembered to close the windows. Regina had lied, she definitely wanted the outlaw to wake now. For him to wrap his muscular arms around her and place a few gentle kisses on her cheek.
She smiled briefly as she ran her dainty fingers along his stubble. The queen was usually quite particular about facial hair, and wouldn't let an unshaven man anywhere near her, but it was different with Robin. She could've guessed, he was her soulmate. He stirred and moaned quietly before his eyes fluttered open. Apart from being soulmates, the pair shared their hatred for mornings. But this was the best waking he could've asked for.
His eyes opened to the view of Regina's perfect face. He was forever in awe of the fact that she could just wake up and look completely gorgeous. Her hair was never knotted, and her eyes always wide open and full of life. "How the hell did I end up this lucky?" He whispered before stroking her chin lovingly. The queen's heart did a backwards flip in her chest and she leant over him, "You didn't." She watched as Robin raised his eyebrows in response. "I did."
Regina let his lips meet hers and she leant fully into the kiss, admiring his muscular arms as they wrapped around her chest, bringing them closer together. As they pulled away, their noses bumped each other's gracefully, and she smiled. "What is it?" Robin asked.
Her voice was almost husky, "I just... never thought I'd have this. After Daniel, I was certain I'd never love again. And with my mother constantly reminding me that love was weakness, I never really tried."
He sighed, "Well, know you know your mother was wrong. Love isn't weakness. If that was really the case, you never would've been able to wake me."
"I guess that's true." Regina nodded in agreement before running her fingers along his chest. "Although, she once tried to set me up with your nemesis."
This certainly caught the outlaw's attention, "I'm sorry, what? You and the sheriff of Nottingham?" Regina smirked, she may claim to not be the evil queen anymore, but it did make her feel good knowing she'd annoyed him. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were jealous." She smirked, and watched him as he rolled his eyes. "And if you're willing to listen, maybe I'll explain."
Robin instantly sat up, wanting to know what had happened with the pair. Seeing this just made her realise how in love she was with him. The way he was concerned, the way he cared about her.
"Well, it was a winter's night, and maybe six months since the King died. My mother was safely locked up in Wonderland, and I was speaking to my father at my vanity. That was when Cora showed up. Mind you, I have no clue how she got through the portal."
"Hang on, you banished your own mother to Wonderland?"
The queen only rolled her eyes in response, why couldn't he just listen to her?
"She told me she had found my soulmate - you. Obviously, she hadn't, otherwise, you know. And what's more, she'd set up a date!"
Regina shuffled in the blankets, now lying with her head on his chest. She was debating whether to continue; it wasn't exactly one of her proudest moments.
"And then, she poofed me into this beautiful gown, the one I was wearing the night I first met Daniel. That was the moment where I really believed, in my heart, that she had changed. That she felt regret over what she'd done to me."
"But I take it things didn't go as she'd planned."
The queen ignored his comment and continued, knowing her story would speak for itself. "So, I took him to my apple tree -" But before she could continue, Robin interrupted her.
"Hang on, so that tree is your hookup spot? The place we first kissed?"
"Are you forgetting? I thought he was my soulmate! He had the tattoo, and I never saw your face in the bar."
He snapped, "Well maybe if you'd actually gone inside!"
That was it. Her face turned red. He was right, if she'd gone inside, her life could've taken a completely different path. If she hadn't been so afraid...
"I'm sorry." He muttered. Regina kissed his cheek gently.
"No. You're right."
The silence was terrifying. She understood it must be hard for him, knowing she'd almost got together with his worst enemy. But she had done far worse...
"Why don't you continue?" Robin returned the favour and kissed the top of her head lovingly.
The Queen cleared her throat, "Well, then I told him about Daniel. Thinking about it now, it probably wasn't the best move to bring up my ex on the first date. I clearly wasn't over him." Noticing Robin's anxious expression, she laughed, "But I am now! It's you I love." Regina let herself gaze into the pools of sapphire for a few more seconds. "And he put his arms around me and told me that he was strong. That he would be strong for me so that I could be weak. As I'm sure you can imagine, that didn't go down too well."
"I don't understand." He looked up at her, "Why did your mother go to all that trouble to find someone who wasn't even your soulmate?"
"She wanted me to have a child."
Robin had so many questions, but he knew better than to push her. "And what became of the sheriff?"
Regina sighed, "If I'd had it my way, he would've burnt in the fireplace. But my mother let him go."
"I still can't believe he was going to have a baby with you. After your mother made it perfectly clear she only wanted you to be with someone of high class, you would've thought she'd be against you and Nottingham. Still, I'm glad you didn't have a child with him."
The queen chuckled, and kissed him sweetly. "Me too."
"I always knew there was a reason I hated him." Robin concluded.
