"No." Regina whispered. The woman was barely metres away from them now, and Nila didn't really know what to expect. She'd never seen her mother this frightened.
"Hello, Regina." The woman spoke in an authoritative tone, and immediately made her uncomfortable. Who the hell was she? And how did she make her mother so afraid?
"I thought-" The queen began, her voice shaky.
"I was dead?" She laughed, "Of course not! I had to see you." The woman raised her hand to stroke Regina's cheek. "I had to see my daughter."
She was Regina's mother, her grandmother? "Cora?" The girl whispered instinctively. She'd read all about the queen's mother in Henry's storybook, and she never came away as the most caring person. "So, you know who I am. Good."
Yes, she knew who she was. The woman who had killed her father, destroyed their chance at being a family, and tried to have her killed.
Nila turned to face her mother, wondering if she was okay. Her face had turned quite red and she hadn't spoken for a while. "You have the nerve to show up here, on the anniversary of Daniel's death?" It all made sense. Her mother's distracted glances, and the gift her father had given his fiance long ago.
Cora sighed, "Relax. I thought you were over that stable boy now. Word on the street is you have a new man." The queen shook her head, word on the street indeed. More like her mother trying to play mind games with her. No, this time it wasn't going to work. She had people she cared about now, like her daughter.
"I swear, if you hurt Robin I'll-"
"As much as I'd like to, I'm not here to 'destroy your happiness'. I've changed." The woman smiled, but Nila wasn't buying it. And neither was her mother.
"And why should I believe any of this? You're incapable of change, mother. You've been too bad for too long. Go back to wonderland. You're not welcome here." The queen turned away, still holding her daughter close to her.
"What? And deprive me of the chance to meet my granddaughter? I think not." Cora scoffed and walked towards Nila. "Hm. You do look like him, don't you? Pity he's not here to meet you now." The girl fought to get out of her mother's grip. How dare she? How dare she waltz in here like this and gloat?
"Don't." Her mother whispered. "It's not worth it."
"I agree," Cora smiled evilly. "Listen to your mother, dear. Mothers do always seem to know best, don't they?"
"Enough, mother. Why are you here?" Regina stepped forward and looked her mother directly in the eyes.
"I'm here to see you, Regina. I missed my family - something I'm sure you can understand. I noticed you haven't got your son here."
"What do you know of my son?" The queen raised her eyebrows and placed her hands on her hips.
"Enough," She replied, "Enough to know that you miss him, and what he means to you. I know you want him back." A tear fell down Regina's cheek, landing on her daughter's arm.
"I do." She whispered.
"And I want my daughter back." Cora opened her arms and hugged Regina, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. And as much as Nila wanted to believe that was true, there was something suspicious about the whole thing. She didn't trust her grandmother one bit.
*Author's note - In this story, Cora never visits storybrooke in s2 and so Regina hasn't seen her since the curse. Hopefully that makes sense. Anyway, hope you enjoyed and remember to leave a comment and vote below!
