Clara took a deep breath and threw all caution to the wind. "Junior year was supposed to be my second-to last time being a camper at my church summer camp: Devout Horizons..."
"Figures." Florence mumbled before letting Clara continue.
It was hot and sticky out on that sunny June day. The teen campers were all standing around in a circle with wide smiles awaiting instruction, it was the highly anticipated annual scavenger hunt.
Clara was on the yellow team so her and her group were decked out in the bright color, she tucked her oversized yellow t-shirt into her shorts and tightened her matching bandanna.
"Clara, looks like we're on the same team again; they must really not want the other teams to win this year." Ezekiel laughed as he pulled his yellow socks up higher than normal. Clara and Ezekiel had been friends since their first time at Devout Horizons when they were six years old. Other campers would often joke that the two of them were dating which could make their friendship awkward at times.
Clara felt the gaze of one of her teammates fall upon her, she side eyed the girl with the charming smile. She looked as though she was eager to chat with Clara, which flushed her cheeks.
Alma Leighton was the pastor's seventeen year old daughter, with straight blonde hair and a cheery attitude mixed with innocence, she made the perfect poster child of divinity. Both girls had exchanged looks since they arrived at camp, Clara wasn't for certain if it was flirtatious or just her overanalyzing the situation.
~Clara had been single for awhile now and was still recovering from the make-out session she had with Lainey that took place last summer; unfortunately nothing ever happened again between them after that night. Lainey wasn't interested in a relationship especially since she was going to be heading off to college across the country in the fall, this was semi-disappointing for Clara but she hadn't necessarily seen a future with Lainey anyway.~
"Alrighty yellow team, here are the scavenger hunt lists. We should definitely pair up in twos for the the sake of productivity. I'll assign each pairing certain items on the list and hopefully that will be the most effective." Alma instructed, handing out the pieces of paper.
Clara turned to Ezekiel, noticing his dark brown eyes fixated on Holly B, who was arguably the prettiest girl at Devout Horizons. "Ezekiel do y-" Clara was drowned out by her friend calling out: "Hey Holly, do you wanna be my partner for the hunt?" She watched as Ezekiel jogged up to the long legged red head. Clara scanned the other yellow team campers who were all quickly pairing up. Defeated, realizing she was alone, looked towards Alma who met her gaze. "Hi Clara, looks like we're partners." She beamed. Clara couldn't deny that Alma was pretty; but hardly her type, she was overbearingly friendly and could come off as naive at times.
At this point, Clara had accepted that she was also attracted to girls but hadn't explicitly came out and said it; and she knew that Devout Horizons was the last place her sexuality needed to be premiered.
After the countdown hit zero, the two girls set out into the woods with their list. After thirty minutes of small talk, the pair had found three of their five items and were hurrying to find the remaining ones.
"It couldn't hurt to check in the maintenance shed." Alma offered, poking her head out from around the corner, Clara checked the list of items they had to search for. "I'm not sure that the 'material of the crown upon Jesus' head' -whatever that means- will be found in a rundown shed." Clara bit the inside of her cheek, cautiously reading the situation.
"Thorns- the crown upon Jesus's head was made out of thorns. But we can find those anywhere in the woods, lets knock off the harder ones.." She analyzed the list. "Oh I know, 'what nailed Jesus to the cross?' That would be nails- which could quite possibly be found in a... shed." Alma grinned disappearing into the small structure, leaving Clara stranded to contemplate whether or not it was a good idea to put herself in a isolated space with Alma.
