Hospital Visit

The pale florescent light made me dizzy. As I strolled down the white halls, following the nurse to go see my mother, a horrid sick feeling rose in my stomach. Was she okay? We approached the door to my mother's room, the nurse waved me to it, "This is it."

I trembled and stepped forward, embracing myself. The room was dark and had no windows, only a painting of a landscape brightened the room. She laid on her bed, covered in bandages and a machine pumped oxygen into her through a mask. Kneeling next to her, tears streaked my cheeks.

"Mom," I mumbled, "Are you okay?"

She didn't respond.

I pushed away the wetness, the thoughts of my teddy bear of a father entering my mind. He was probably wrapped up like a mummy too. The fact that their hearty laughs were replaced with screams of agony from the flames, drove my depression into vengeance.

I didn't care if I was only 17, whoever burned my house down had it coming to them.

Nudging my hair out of my face, I stood up and sat in the lonely chair across from my mother.

"Mom, I love you and I promise . . . I'll make it better."

My cell phone buzzed, I answered it, "Hello?"

"Hi, Elise," Anna spoke, her voice melodic as usual. I abandoned her while shopping to go check on the house, she was my closest friend.

"What do you want?" I switched the phone on my ears.

"You left quickly, just worried."

I explained the situation, I went on a rant, normally I'm the silent one, too afraid to speak up.

"I'm sorry," She said, "If there is anything I could do?"

"No . . . yes, tell everyone at school that I'm sick, the fire never happened."

"Elise."

"Just do it."

She sighed, "Fine, why?"

"I'm going to be out for a few days."

"I don't understand."

"Soon enough you will," I hung up and tucked my phone into my bag.

Already, I conjured a plan to find that stinking pyro myself and send him to jail. As I thought, I watched my mother rest, the machine hissing, her eyes shut. My heart burned with vengeance.

"I'll find them," I whispered, standing and kissing her forehead.

I marched out of the room, finding my dad and doing the same. As I exited his room and turned the corner, Sky bumped into me.

"Jeez, Sky," I complained, "I thought you were leaving."

He smirked, "Yeah well, I remembered that you were homeless."

"I can sleep in my car, thank you," I kept walking.

He blocked me, intercepting my arms and licking his lips, "Aw, Elise, you deserve better."

I stared into his eyes, "No. We've only been together for 3 weeks, I'm not sleeping with you."

He knitted his eyebrows, "I'm not thinking like that, I want you warm, staying in my bed while I take the couch."

"Don't you live alone?"

He nodded.

"No."

I strolled by him. Stunned, he snuck behind me and whispered into my ear, "Please, you're a beautiful woman, worthy of much more then loneliness in that car."

Blinking multiple times, I slightly smiled, "Okay, only because you insisted."
