Percy's POV
When I woke up this morning I could tell it was going to be a bad day. I don't know how I knew, but I was right. I stumbled out of bed and went over to my mirror to asses my injuries. My stupid stepfather Gabe had lost his poker game last night, and he was not happy. Then when he finally did come home he saw me up watching TV. That did it for him. After throwing me into the wall, I lost count of how many times he whipped me. I finally got out when he collapsed out of drunkenness.
I looked in my bathroom mirror and cringed at what I saw. I hadn't bothered to look last night, I was too tired. My back was a bloody mess of torn skin. I pulled myself into the shower and almost screamed when the water hit my wound. After I had washed away most of the blood, I jumped out and bandaged it up with gauze. All the other injuries weren't bad enough to bother with.
I slipped on a pair of jeans and a navy blue hoodie that I found in one of the moving boxes. We moved in one week ago, but I didn't bother to unpack. We would be gone in a few months, so why bother? After I brushed my teeth and tamed my hair, I slipped as quietly as I could outside into the brisk New York morning. I made my way through the streets, the way to school already memorized. I it took me about 20 minutes, and I was still one of the first ones there. I picked up my schedule earlier this week so there was no need to go to the office.
I found my locker fairly quickly, and spun the dial to my combination. The door opened with and audible creak. I inserted my notebooks and folders, taking one of each along with a pencil with me. I made my way to homeroom, but the door was locked and the teacher wasn't there yet. I made my way out into the courtyard the school had. I found a bench and started drawing in my notebook.
All of the sudden, I felt someone put their hands on my back and push. I went sprawling onto the ground, my back burning where the hands had touched. I rolled over just in time for a large boot to come down where my head was a second ago. I stood up and looked at my assailant.
It was a he, and his brown stringy hair was matted down on his forehead. He had on baggie jeans and a shirt that showed he came from money. His eyes were glinting weirdly in the morning sun. I picked myself up and began to walk away. He must not have been too smart because he followed. He finally caught up when I was in the school's common room thingie.
"No one walks away from a fight with me," I hear being yelled behind me. I ducked just in time to see his meaty fist going over my head. I really didn't want to fight but he gave me no choice
"You're going to wish you did," I said, standing up to face me.
He did the stupidest thing imaginable. He charged me. I waited until the last second then stepped out of his way. He kept going and ended up running head on straight into the concrete wall. He shook his head and turned to face me. He came at me again, but when I stepped out of the way this time, he struck his hand out and pulled me down, hard. I gasped for air when I saw him towering over me.
"Not so tough are you now," he slurred, swaying a little.
He must have hit his head pretty hard I thought to myself. I wonder though, how hard would you have to hit your head for it to be fatal? NO! Stupid ADHD. I looked up just in time to see his fist coming straight at me. I brought my hand up and caught his in mine. I twisted it and heard a pop sound. He screamed, probably more for show.
I looked around and saw we had attracted attention from the other students. There was this one girl looking at me with concern in her gray eyes. She had blond hair framing her face, and she looked like the only on-looker that wasn't happy to see a fight. I looked down and saw the boy crying and cradling his wrist. The boy standing next to the gray-eyed girl rushed forward and picked up what looked like his friend. They slowly made their way to the nurse, and I walked to my homeroom.
I was hoping the rest of the day would pass without incident. It didn't.
That's what I get for wishing, I guess.
