The frightened and uneasy teenage girl jolts awake by the rough slamming of rusty metal digging into her lower back. She begins to panic as she realises she is in some sort of old fashioned mining elevator that she can't remember ever stepping foot into. The elevator comes to a sudden stop and the force pushes her back into the familiar yet painful position she was originally in. The darkness surrounding her becomes an usual sight until the top of the crate swings open revealing a blinding beam of sunlight causing her to swing her hands up to her face blocking the blazing sun.
Before she can even gather together a thought as to what was going on, the crate becomes surrounded by what had appeared to be 50 pre-pubescent boys all mumbling things such as-
"Omg, it's a girl!" and "Wait, have I ever seen a girl before? I can't remember"
Before a loud and authoritative voice bellows from above-
"Give her some room goddammit! Just because she is a girl doesn't mean she isn't a scared little greenie like you shanks once where, now scat!"
She suddenly feels a wave of safety as she is aware that wherever she may be, they do in fact have rules and a leader. She slowly makes her way out of the crate to be escorted by a broad shouldered, 5ft10, fierce, dark haired boy who quickly introduces himself to reduce the stress that he is aware she's feeling-
"Hi, I'm Gally. You're alright, I promise. You are the first girl here so you have all the other boys asking questions. I run this place, meaning nothing bad will ever happen to you, I give you my word on that!" He lets out a slight giggle to make her feel more comfortable. He begins to explain everything including where she is, what is going on and how things work.
"We call this the glade, it's our home. By the way, you aren't going to remember your name until-" she cuts him off correcting him-
"Andrea, my name is Andrea".
A little smile grows on his face as he goes to say something but once again gets interrupted by this time by a 5ft7, blonde, lanky boy who nervously walks up and says-
"Hi greenie! My name is newt, I am second in command and I felt that I should check up on you considering the chaos earlier. Do you have a name yet?"
Gally continues talking despite the anger clearly growing inside him-
"Yes newt, this is Andrea! Do you mind showing her around for me?"
Andrea begins to protest against the idea as she is unsure about leaving Gally but he gives her a reassuring smile that significantly calms her down. Newt acknowledges the chemistry between Andrea and Gally so he decides to say something-
" I'm sure you haven't noticed but Gally totally has a thing for you!"
Andrea immediately gets confused and decides to question his statement-
"What? No he doesn't, I literally just got here. How would you know that anyways?"
Andrea is unaware of the friendship between Gally and Newt so he decides to enlighten her-
"Gally is the leader of this place. He is always so bossy and uptight, even to the greenies. He hates literally everyone, but you have been here no longer than 30 minutes and he's already smiled twice!"
A smile begins to grow on Andrea's face and has no choice but to agree with Newt-
"Okay, I guess you're right! That doesn't make a difference whatsoever"
*20 minutes later and Newt has shown Andrea around the glade*
"I should probably tell you about the maze before you do something you shouldn't and Gally kills me for it" he lets out a slight sigh as if he is tired of saying the same thing over and over again.
Andrea's curiosity level shoots through the roof-
"What is the maze? Why would Gally kill you? Can I see this famous maze?" she says whilst slightly raising her voice in excitement.
Newt gets a little overwhelmed yet excited and the amount of questions Andrea has but he knows that she is going to be disappointed by the answers he has-
"Wow you have a lot of questions. You see those doors? That is the maze. Nobody ever survives a night in the maze, which leads me to your next question. Gally has taken a particular interest in you whether it's a little crush or instinct to protect you doesn't matter, if you go in there it would be my fault as I am the one giving you the tour. And your last question, you can see it perfectly fine from here. Don't ever go in the maze, you hear me?"
Andrea nods her head in disappointment but also understands the importance of Newt's answers. She very quickly realises that she hasn't met anybody else and asks if she can introduce herself to the others and Newt agrees to her brilliant idea. Newt stands next to Andrea as he points to the boys in his inner circle telling her their names and jobs-
"That's Minho, he's the keeper of the runners. They run the maze everyday trying to find a way out"
Before he even gets the chance to explain Andrea questions what he had just said-
"I thought you said that nobody can go into the maze?" she questioned
"I know, they are runners because they are the fastest and strongest of us all which is good because if they don't make it back in time they spend the rest of the night in the maze" he says nervously
"I understand, let's get back to the introductions!" she exclaimed to raise the mood.
"Yes, that's fry. He is the glades cook, makes sure everyone eats what they need to. Those there *he points to two short boys standing against a tree* they are the medjacks, they bandage up all the people who end up getting hurt. Gally is, as you know, the leader of the glade. He calls all of the shots around here. And then there is me, I am a gardener also second in command. I grow all of the food that fry cooks"
Andrea instantly grabs Newt's hand and drags him over to the boys so she can introduce herself, luckily they are all in the same area so she doesn't have to make plenty of individual awkward conversation-
"Hi, I'm Andrea. Newt told me all of your names, it's great to meet you all!" *she starts to shake everyone's hands politely* She quickly notices Gally in the corner of her eye and decides to run up to him to tell him about her day-
"Hey Gally, you never believe how much fun I've had today!" she squealed
"Wow Ray, come on. You can tell me about it while we build your hut and hammock!" he smiles.
Andrea liked the idea of Gally giving her a nickname, it made her feel unique.
*Gally and Andrea talk all evening until a knock on the hut door* Gally shoots up to see who it is, almost as if he was protecting Andrea from anything harmful. Andrea notices and smiles to herself, however she only thinks of him as her best friend. Gally opens the door startling a glader who explains that the glade is having a bonfire that night and decides to invite Andrea. Gally looks back at Andrea to see whether she would like to attend and the massive smile on her face answered for her.
"She will be there, won't you Ray?" Gally says
"Yes, of course". The glader leaves and Andrea whispers to Gally-
"A bonfire? What for?" she asked
"Every month when someone new comes up in the box, we have a bonfire for them. This month it's you, meaning you have to go considering you're the guest of honour!" he lets out a little giggle.
