A few days later
It was a New day at Stelag 13. The air was still cold but the men were forced outside for an hour a day to do sports and have fun. The only fun they got an entire day. Newkirk sat on a wooden bench by his Barack with the gang, as they chose to do their laundry instead to get it done. "I don't care what you guys say, the other team will win." LeBeau said, followed by giggles from the others.
Hogan finished his load handing them to Kinch to be hung on the line. "Is that all of it?" Newkirk asked washing his hands in the bucket of water. "I think so. I can't find anything else Klink dumped on us." Carter said. "Alright guys. Go ahead and put the soap away." Hogan said. The gang went their ways for the 30 minutes Klink required to be silent a day. Newkirk sat on his bunk opening a book to calm down. He leaned against the wall with the support of a pillow. He lifted his tight shirt to let his bump breathe as he had no other clothing to fit him. He laid his hand on the crown of his bump massaging it slowly due to his expanding skin causing itchiness.
After a few minutes of reading, he felt a twitching sensation below his belly button. He jerked a bit at the sensation looking at himself with a raised brow. He felt the same twitching feeling below his belly button again taking a few seconds before realizing it's the little baby inside of him. He gasped and placed his band where the sensation was happening. "Are you- are you kicking?" His stomach twitched again before Hogan walked in the door. Newkirk looked up with tears in his eyes. "B- babe come here! I think the baby is kicking." Hogans eyes widened.
"Are you serious?" Hogan climbed up the bunk setting next to the Englander. He placed his hand next to Newkirk's and felt the twitch run in the middle of his palm. They both tear up and a smile runs across their faces. "Is that our baby?" Newkirk asked. Hogan nodded and laid his lips against Newkirk's. "Yup, that's ours."
They both smile before the conversation continues. "So Newkirk, I found a way to help smuggle some stuff into camp. I had Kinch contact London so we should be getting some supplies." Hogan said.
"Supplies? Such as?" Newkirk said. "I got some diapers to last us for a while, some gender neutral clothes, and I even got a yoga ball for you."
"What will I need a yoga ball for?" Newkirk looked at Hogan confused. "I heard it helps with labor, to help you go into labor and during. Since we have absolutely no idea how far along you are. It might be a good idea."
Newkirk nodded. "Thank you.. so much. I mean it. I don't know how I'd do this without you." They both kiss again before hearing the door open. Carter walked in. "Sir... General Burkhalter is here." They both pick up and get off the bunk sneaking a peak outside the door. "Okay, let's keep an eye on it. Get the others in here. Get Kinch to turn on the radio."
Carter nods and Newkirk runs out to grab the others. Carter keeps an eye on the General as him and Klink goes into his office. They all climb down into the tunnel where Kinch connects a few wires to his coffee pot turning on the red light.
"General Burkhalter how nice to see you!" Klink says with a happy tone in his voice. "I wish I could say the same. Klink we have serious matters to discuss. This must stay in this office."
Klink nods. "Of course sir! I run an air tight camp." General Burkhalter rolls his eyes. "Alright Klink. Did you find the culprit?"
Newkirk's eyes widened. He felt as if he could almost throw up. "Uh... not yet sir."
"What do you MEAN not yet? Pregnancy tests are stolen Klink! It's not hard to figure it out!" General Burkhalter yelled. "We are trying sir. We had to get more stuff for tests. But we are doing our best and I shall get the results to you by the end of the week."
"Oh my gosh..." Newkirk said. He couldn't tell if he was released of stress, or even more sick than he was. "Relax Newkirk. We will handle this. Just remain calm. Klink and Shultz are the only Germans who know and it will stay that way for as long as we can help it." Hogan said. Newkirk nodded and took a deep breath. He tried to control his heart racing but it took a long time. "So what do we do now?" Carter asked.
"We have to monitor our escape activity still until Burkhalter and his gang of Krauts leave. We just don't know how long it will be."
"There's too much German activity at the ends of the camp. So we're pretty much stuck here unless London says differently." Kinch added.
The gang agreed. "I'll go get us food. We all barely ate today." LeBeau said. "Thanks Louis." Newkirk added. The gang heads back up to the Barack. They were still internally freaking out as this was a gang problem now. Newkirk hated dragging the others into his problems, but they all rode together wherever they went. It was all because of friendship and helping others escape Germany to live better lives that they stick together.
And they would take sticking together everyday for the rest of their lives if they had the choice.
Stay tuned! ~JHB
