he saw it all

the tears

running down her pale, gaunt cheeks

she looked exhausted

as if life was a chore

and it was all his fault

"don't cry" he whispered

she looked at him, humorlessly

"leave" she said quietly

her voice was quiet

but it spoke volumes

volumes

he looked at her, eyes narrowing

he was ready to beg

he would do anything for her

anything

anything but let her in

we hurt the ones we love the most

we hurt the ones we love the most

those words rung in his mind

clinging to his mind every time

he let her in

and that's when

the boy came out

a cocky, superficial smile on his lips

he wrapped his arm around her waist

"who is he?" the boy looked him and down

she waved her hand, dismissing him

he felt a tear

but he smiled

"nobody" she finally said

how is it to be nobody to the one person you'd give your life for?

he could see the apology in her eyes

but before the shame could wash over her

he was gone

a ghost in the night

his fancy blue shoes, clapping over the pavement

his bmw, black and sleek, on the curb

it was familiar to her, in a sense

him leaving

his feet against the pavement

but yet

the smile was nowhere to be seen
