Under the enchanting Vilnorian summer sky, the residents of Vilnor were abruptly pulled from their daily routines by a thunderous roar, followed by the explosive disintegration of components too fragile to withstand the impact caused by the Zinka-Otch 9000 spacecraft—the cruise vehicle of King Al'Zalkaprim from the planet Zolnir.
A second seismic event, as brief as the first, followed suit. Finally, a flash of light dazzled the eyes of the Vilnorians.
A thick, acrid black smoke mingled with the last intact emergency alarm lights. Heads tilted to the side, arms hanging limp along the seats; the pilot and co-pilot seemed inert.
The crew members and occupants had tried, in a last hope, to enter the escape pods.
Out of the last six, two remained intact. Their occupants had managed to close the doors.
In one, the Doctor, Yaz, and a crew member were present. In the other, Graham, Ryan, and King Al'Zalkaprim lay on top of each other like a pile of dirty laundry.
Injured and unconscious, only the Doctor seemed to be regaining consciousness. She cast an uncertain glance around.
With a faint groan, Yaz quickly showed signs of life. The Doctor had to free her foot from the lifeless body of a crew member.
She didn't even know his name.
All lights were absent from the compartment; only a halo formed around the slightly ajar door. Raising an arm to push the heavy door, she tried to shout and coughed.
The air was filled with dust. In a final effort, she pulled herself out of the capsule and fell heavily onto sandy ground.
Holding her ribs, she let out a scream.
The small silhouettes advancing in the distance seemed to grow darker.
The crunch of a boot near her ear woke her up. Someone stood over her. In one hand, they held a short-range transmission device. In the other, there was a syringe containing a bluish liquid.
The latter was dangerously close to her neck. She tried in vain to push it away. The syringe pierced her neck, a sensation of warmth enveloped her. Unconsciousness lurked around the corner, eager to spread through every corner of her mind.
"No... not human... hearts."
Two silhouettes were now bending over her.
