Hobi sat up straight. He turned the next page with a frown. The next chapter started with Hopi dreaming that he was standing inside the pavilion. Standing in the middle, Hopi saw that there were two ways out. One was leading to a sun-soaked garden, the other to a shaded part of the wood but far off in the distance was a clearing the sun touched. He felt someone walk beside him. It was Emiko and she took his hand. He was drawn to the wooded area, but when he made a step towards the wooded area, she pulled at him and led him out to the sunny garden instead. He smiled at her, but he turned to look back at the other entrance. The next page begins with a panel of Hopi sitting up in bed. He turned to Emiko who was sound asleep. After so many years, he recalled the day they spent at Soswaewon. It was the day they met, and he instantly fell in love with Emiko. Hopi remembered that he was on a high and he made a wish to fulfill his dreams. He could not remember hers, or maybe he did not find out. It was vague.
Hopi let her sleep in and he opened the door to pick up the newspaper placed as usual on their doormat every morning. He scanned the front page and at the bottom where the cultural news was found, he was greeted by the image of Soswaewon. The historical site was hit by lightning. There were some damages to one of the pavilions which needed extensive repair and needed to be deconstructed for restoration.
Jimin walked into their bedroom and found Hobi sitting on the bed with the night light on. "You haven't moved all day!" he smiled. "Where are you in the story?"
Hobi looked up, his face looked extremely bothered. "Soswaewon was hit by lightning. It makes me feel uneasy."
"It does?" Jimin said jumping on his bed and taking an interest. "How so?"
"Yoongi-hyung was saying earlier today that it wouldn't matter because destiny is destiny, Even if goblins interfere, destiny will still play out, but I feel like it still feels wrong."
"This is very interesting!" Jimin gave a small laugh. "Well, Hoseokie-hyung, let me ask you. Supposing you were Hopi and the goblins gave you a choice. Follow your heart and be with Emiko or follow your dream, what would you choose?"
Hobi searched the ceiling for answers before he decided. "I will follow my dream. I want to be a man my love will be proud of. When I offer my hand, I want to be the best me so I can take care of her." He said carefully. "Why are you smiling like that?" he frowned at the big smile on Jimin's face.
"Nothing." Jimin replied. He stood up and waved goodbye. "Carry on!" he said before leaving the room.
Jimin sprinted to the living room where the rest of the members were waiting for him. They were all huddled over the maknaes' phones discussing theories about Emiko and Hopi.
"What did he say?" Taehyung asked.
"He is going to choose dream." Jimin smiled. Some of the members groaned and started pulling at their back pockets.
"Pay up!" Yoongi grinned. He gave Jeongguk and Jimin a high five and they started collecting from the rest.
"I'm actually very disappointed." Jin complained as he handed a couple of bills to Yoongi, Jimin, and Jeongguk.
"Hyungie is a very practical person." Jeongguk smiled as he arranged his newly acquired wealth in his wallet.
"This book is really more interesting thinking Hobi is Hopi." Namjun smiled. "Do we know anything else about the author?"
Everyone started clicking on their phones to search.
Back in the bedroom, Hobi remained riveted. He was quickly sifting through pages of Hopi having the same haunting dream. On the following page, Hopi stood up from his bed in the middle of the night to go on the internet to search about Soswaewon. It was not a well-known fact but there have been some people who say that if you make a wish in the garden, it tends to come true. The next day, as Emiko prepared breakfast, Hopi approached her and asked if she recalled the day they met and visited Soswaewon. She smiled and said she did. Hopi asked what her wish was. "I wished for you to fulfill your heart's desire." was her response. Hobi stopped at a full panel of Hopi embracing Emiko in the middle of their kitchen.
"Aish." Hobi sighed. He was imagining what Hopi must be feeling at that moment. He was sure Hopi was also thinking about the trade-off.
He continued the following chapter.
Hopi took a bus to Soswaewon. It was closed to the public, so he scaled the wall and let himself in. He walked up to Daebang and found a portion of the roof collapsed and damaged by fire. He walked up the pavilion and saw that some of the beams have fallen to the floor and in the rubble, two coins lay on the ground. Hopi picked up the coins and was overcome by anger. "If this is what it is, then I call you out, goblin to explain yourself!" he shouted.
Not one but the two dokkaebi formerly knowns as Jo Gwangjo and Yang San-bo appeared. They looked displeased with his petulance. "How dare you play with our fate," Hopi called out. The goblins warned him and thought him ungrateful.
Hopi reasoned that although Emiko wished benefited him, it was not what he asked for and it was unfair that it altered his path.
The goblins offered him a deal. If he truly felt so strongly that he was maligned, then they can turn back the clock and he can start over. Rashly, Hopi handed the coins back to the goblins and they faded away. Hopi wondered if that was all there was to it. Nothing seems to have changed. As he made his way down the path, he walked past the two other pavilions and remembered what Emiko said about what they stood for. The evening rain washes away the failures and mistakes, and the morning sun and breeze herald a new day.
Hopi stopped in his tracks and his heart started pounding. "Emiko." Hopi said. Just then, the rain started falling all around him. He ran home realizing the consequences of what he had done. He was going to forget her in the morning. He ran as fast as he could.
By the time Hobi got to the last page, he was sobbing.
Hopi had his head on Emiko's lap as he cried and confessed what he had done. "I'm sorry." He told her. Emiko lifted his face and assured him that if they were destined to be together then they will find each other again. The road may be tough, but he had to keep rising from the ashes. He promised to find her and do his best to remember her. On a piece of paper, she wrote him her last love letter. It read:
Hold
On
Pain
EndsShe instructed him to keep it in his pocket to remind him to keep going forward and to stay strong. They held on to each other all night until they fell asleep.
Hopi woke up alone in bed feeling a sense of loss. "Did I leave something behind at work?" He thought. Something itchy was in his pocket and he reached in to fish it out. It was a piece of paper that read: Hold On Pain Ends. He can't recall where he picked it up, but it was a nice saying to live by. He reached out to his side table and put the paper inside.
"Nooooooooooo!!" Hobi's voice echoed throughout the dorm.
