"There she is, la mia principessa." Marcello Rossi brightens up as Lily enters the dinning room. He puts down his newspaper, smiling at Lily all dashing and strong with his salt and pepper beards, his eyes creasing at the corners.
Lily hugs her Pa, pecking his both cheeks in greeting. "Home is complete whenever you are around, Pa. I hate not having you here." Lily says as Pa stands up and pulls out a chair for her. She smiles and mutters her thanks as she settles. She veers around, the table is all set. There's no work left for her do.
Pa relaxes back on his sit at the head of the table and frowns. "Business can be very demanding. You mother understands, si bellissimo?"
Ma saunters into the dinning room. "A man must do what he must. I understand, my love. But I don't blame our daughter. Whenever you're around, you spoil her too much with all your attention." She replies.
Pa laughs. It's a deep sultry sound. "If I didn't know better, I would say you're jealous."
Ma huffs. "Jealous? God forbid."
"I can still tell when you lie, bella. You're not as good at it as you think." Pa winks at Lily.
Ma elegantly settles at the right hand side of her husband, outstretch her hands for both her man and daughter to hold, closing her eyes. "Can we now share the grace? I'm starving."
After sharing the grace, they eat silently.
"How was your trip." Lily breaks the silence.
"Mostly boring." Pa waves off the subject.
"Perhaps, I shall accompany you to your next trip?" Lily asks hopefully.
Pa becomes solemn like he usually did whenever Lily talked about leaving the island. "You're not ready. Believe me, you're missing out nothing. You will accompany me once the time is right."
There is it.
Pa's usual response. When the time is right. Probably when she must have crossed menopause and passed her prime.
"Let's not soil the mood, Lily. It's a lovely evening. Let's eat peacefully as a family, yes?" Ma intervenes.
They continue to eat. Noise only coming from their clattering cutleries.
"I have a surprise for you after dinner." Marcello tells his daughter.
She lights up, looking up from twirling her salad. "Really?"
Pa nods.
"I can't wait." Lily mutters to herself.
