Ch.1 The Purpose of a Pawn

'It's been a decade since the war ended, since the empire took over, since I last saw him.' Thought a young man laying on his bed, starring at the ceiling with a stoic expression on his face.

He is a young man that has wild, midnight blue hair and cerulean blue eyes. He had a light tan and had angular features on his face. He was muscular, but was built like a track runner. His most notable feature is his stoic face, like he doesn't care about anything, his name is Noel Smith.

Noel did not always have such an emotionless face, his face once wore a huge smile that will brighten up anyone's day, but the memories of a little boy smiling  vanished after the news that changed his perspective of humanity.

'The Death of His Father'

His father was killed 10 years ago, on the climax of the war. He was a foot soldier that fought against the empire for 2 years after a draft was needed. He showed bravery, valor and earned the respect of all who fought side by side with him, he never gave up and took stuff head on. His name was Vallion Smith, died on February 14, 2025, the day that signifies love and the day he became a father.

An official came to Noel home in Los Angeles, CA holding two banners, the United States banner and a National Alliances banner. The soldier knocked on our door. When Noel' s mother opened the door she saw the soldier with a grave expression. Noel came running down stairs because he expected a gift from his father, but instead he finds his mother on her knees holding two banners like lifeline, tears were raining down her shocked face. Noel rushed to his mother's side and asked what was wrong, but she stayed silent. Noel glared at the soldier silently demanding an answer. When the soldier told him what happened Noel's brain shut down. His father died in battle by 'The Sacred Cross Empire'.

Noel's mother demanded that she be able to see her husband's body, but they refused saying the only remains that was left was his right arm.

She cried knowing she couldn't even give her husband a proper burial. She noticed her son still hasn't shed a tear for his deceased father, she knew that he was bottling up his emotions.

A month later the war ended with the national alliances surrendering to the empire. The empire took over the world's power and their word became law. They ruled with a monarchy/dictatorship hybrid government. The one who had all the power was the king, the current king of the empire was King Arnold II. 2nd in power will be his council that he personally handpicked, The Order of The Sacred Cross. Below them are the generals that run the military, 7 Generals of Caelum. They are chosen by lineage and their accomplishments. The police force of the empire that enforce 'their' laws and punish any who break them, they're called The Royal Police. Who gets the most power depends on what family you come from and how much money and influence they have.

When Noel heard the news, he was furious. He will live under the same banner that killed his father. His mother made him swear that he will not attempt anything rash against them. Not wanting to argue with his mother, he agreed.

Around the same month the empire took over, Noel's mother, Cristina fell ill. The doctor told her that she had a rare disease that has no known cure. The doctor informed her that she has at most, 1 month to live.

She felt guilty knowing her son will probably hate her for leaving him too and deal with the death of both his parents at a very age. She only hoped he will forgive her.

Noel arrived at his mother hospital room and sees his mom at such a weak state. Her beautiful, silky, blonde hair was now pale in texture. Her beautiful flawless skin had wrinkles and bags under her eyes. She was a complete different women that Noel has gotten used to.

She told him with her last remaining breath to walk the path that he believes is right and that she always love's him.

Noel was attending his mother's funeral, watching as they lower her casket down her burial ground. He looked on with an emotionless face that worried all who attended, they could only imagine what the 7 year old boy is going through.

Daniel Mullin, brother of Cristina, was looking at Noel with a sympathetic expression. Cristina called him the day before her death asking him to become Noel's guardian. He was hesitant at first knowing he would not be able to spent time with him because his job was first priority. But knowing it was his sister's last wish, he accepted.

Noel looked at his new home with a stoic expression. He hated it. He hated his uncle, he hated leaving Los Angeles and leaving the house he grew up in, he hated his new life in England, HE HATED THE SACRED CROSS EMPIRE. He hated how their rule was unjust, how they would eliminate any who oppose them, dispose the weak like we're sacrificial pawns. Pawns are the weakest pieces in a chessboard. They are known as nothing but peasent who have no true value, they could attack but not defend, they could not move left or right, only forward, used mostly as diversions in the art of strategy.

But the truth is that they are the most underestimated piece, within time and careful strategizing, they have the potential to become the strongest of them all, that is the purpose of a pawn.

Noel knows in time he will find a way to eradicate the empire, to bring a world where people can have the freedom they were born with. Bring true peace.
