I rode with the ambulance to the hospital and since then I haven't let Fury leave my sight. There was a large window that allowed us to watch as the doctors operated on him.

One of the nurses in the hospital noticed I was bleeding. I refused to leave Nick for even a moment. The kind nurse allowed me to stay at the window and keep watch over him as she cleaned up my wounds. I winced as she poured a disinfectant onto my thigh which once held glass.

She scolded me for ripping out the glass without knowing how deep the piece of glass was. I nodded my head at her not hearing but not listening to the words that left her mouth. I knew better but I didn't care.

All I cared about was Fury not dying.

The bullet that grazed my wrist left a deep long gash that needed stitches. She injected a shot to numb the area as she stitched the laceration.

I couldn't feel anything more than a pinch as she stitched up the wound. The entire time my eyes didn't leave Fury as the doctors tended to his injuries.

I could lose another person. I just couldn't do it, I wouldn't let myself.

The nurse finished up my stitches and Steve joined me a few minutes later.

"Did you find him?" I asked him, my eyes staying on Fury.

"He got away,"

That was the extent of our talk. Neither of us was in the mood. I'm glad he got the message.

Even though he didn't say much his presence was calming enough. He rubbed my back soothingly. Steve understood how much Nick meant to me.

"I can't lose him, Steve," I spoke softly.

"I know you can't,"

Natasha ran into the room minutes after our short conversation.

"Is he gonna make it?" Natasha asked.

I made no effort to speak.

"I don't know," Steve said as the three of us watched Fury on the table.

He was going to pull through, he had to. Nothing could kill Nick.

He's a stubborn son of a bitch.
