New semester, new schedule. It looked as if I had been moved into the same lunch as Michelle. I hoped she hadn't moved lunches, too. Michelle was the closest thing I had to a friend, and it was more of a mutual respect than a friendship. I also had study hall replaced with Academic Decathlon, right after lunch. Other than that, no schedule changes.
I went about my morning as usual, and then went to lunch. I spotted Michelle sitting alone at a table, and joined her. I pulled out my book and started reading. That was pretty much our relationship-sitting together, reading.
"Did Liz get a new top?"
"Nah, we've seen that one before. Never with that skirt, though."
"We should probably stop staring before it gets creepy."
I turned to look at the table next to us, where a guy was sitting, looking dreamily across the lunchroom. His friend was looking in the same direction, though not as dreamily.
"Too late. You guys are losers," Michelle spoke up.
"Then why do you sit with us?'' the first guy asked.
"Because I've got no friends."
The first guy shrugged and stared at her while his friend gestured to me. "I'm an acquaintance."
"And I'm Ned," he said, holding out his hand to shake.
"Peter," The first boy said.
"I'm Gwen," I said, shaking Ned's hand.
"Is this your first year here?" Peter asked.
"Yep, got in on a scholarship."
"Cool, it was nice meeting you," Ned said, then they went back to gazing across the lunchroom.
"Nice meeting you guys, too," I went back to my book, and finished my lunch with almost 10 minutes left before the next class started. I had decided to go to the AcaDeca room early and try to meet the teachers.
I found the room after a few minutes of searching. I went up to the teacher inside and introduced myself.
"Hi, I'm Gwen Stacy, is this the AcaDeca room?"
"You must be the new alternate. Yeah, you've come to the right place. I'm Mr. Harrington, the supervising teacher. Is this your first year here?"
"Yep, I got in on a scholarship for chemistry, physics, and applied sciences."
"That's great, how much do you know about Africa?"
"Um, a little, not too much though."
"OK, read up on it, that's this year's theme."
"What kind of research are we doing for it? Watching The Lion King?" I asked, sarcastically. He turned and pointed at me, "That is a genius idea. I don't have to teach for two classes now, and it will still count as study time. Thank you Ms..."
"Stacy, Gwen Stacy."
"Great, class is starting soon, you had better get headed to your next class."
"...This is my next class. Where do I sit?"
"Just take a seat anywhere, there's no official seating chart."
"Ok, thanks." Students were starting to trickle in, and I noticed Michelle, Peter, and Ned among them.
A senior took the stage after the bell rang, and said, "Ok, group we have a new participant with us," she pointed to me and said, "This is Gwen, and she will be taking Flash's place as our first alternate -"
