I sat at the table with my chin in my hand. Harry Potter was sitting a few rows ahead of me. He was laughing about something Ron had just whispered to him. I wished to be sat with them.
Books slammed down onto the table next to me and I was shaken out of my thoughts. I glared at the blond that was smiling down at me.
"Day dreaming, (y/n)?" Draco sank into his assigned seat next to me.
"Fuck off."
"Ouch!" Draco laughed as he searched for where we had left off in our books last class. I overheard a pair of Ravenclaw girls gossiping about finding dates to the ball. They were giggling and pointing out boys in the room.
"Are you planning on going to the Yule ball?" I asked Draco, absentmindedly.
"Are you asking me to go to the dance with you?" Malfoy raised an eyebrow at me. He was so cocky.
"Forget it. Just making conversation."
"I don't know yet," he answered. "Are you?"
"If I have a date."
"Are you planning on asking someone?"
"I'm hoping someone will ask me."
"Someone...?"
"That's what I said."
"A specific someone?"
"Why do you care?"
"You're the one who brought it up!" he defended. He was right, but it didn't make his interest any less weird. He didn't usually reciprocate the small talk I attempted.
~
"Hermione! Have you seen Harry around anywhere?"
"Ron said that he was going to find Cho."
"Oh," I said, my smile falling a bit.
"I think he was going to ask her to the Yule ball."
My heart sank.
"Oh, cool! Good for them."
Hermione must've noticed my reaction because she seemed to regret saying what she did.
"I'm sorry, (y/n)..."
"For what?"
She didn't say anything and neither did I. We didn't have to. We both knew. I just forced a smile.
~
"What?"
"What?"
"I can feel you staring at me, Malfoy. What is it?"
I looked up at Draco. He had a light blush across his cheeks. I'd caught him.
"No I wasn't!" He scoffed and looked down at the cauldron. "Give me those." I handed him the billywig stings and sat back in my chair.
Draco was being weirder than usual today. I didn't know what had gotten into him. Sure I was used to carrying the weight in our assignments, but I'd never noticed him staring so often.
Our potion came out less than impressive, but at least it didn't explode like Seamus's always found a way to. I was thrilled when Snape finally released us from class. I was ready for a break from my partner.
"Oi, (y/n)!" I turned back to look at Draco. He was stopped just outside the classroom.
"What?"
"Go to the Yule Ball with me?"
"What?" I hurried closer to him so he wouldn't talk so loud. "Why would I do that?"
"Going with me is sure to drive Potter mad."
