Akaza was the demon who had seen and followed Kyojuro after his defeation of lower moon 2 a while back. Also finally meeting him when he and a younger bunch of slayers fought and killed lower moon 1. The demon didn't fight him to the death, but he did want to exert Kyojuro's skill.
Almost like he wanted to test him to see if he was worthy.
Ever since then the demon would pop up and basically beg the slayer to become one. Even as far as going to the flame estate. But back to his statement.

The Winter Lotus pillar was with the Rengoku brothers, checking the younger wounds and scar tissue.
